Ava felt like shit. Everything felt like shit. Her situation and life felt like shit and she just wanted to run from it all. But she was trapped on this fucking shitty island and even if she escaped Titus or the Drakenhardts in general would track her down and bring her backl
Ava wasn't stupid though, and she knew she didn't actually want to go anywhere or run away. But all kinds of irrational, angry, sad and confusing thoughts had been racing through her mind ever since Titus had told her that...her father was dead. Had been for a while. And even though Ava had never met the guy, had even hated him, had wanted to kick his balls to his throat...she was sad.
Ava wasn't sure what she was sad about. She wasn't sad in the same way about the death itself, as she had been with her mother's. She felt regretful, angry and miserable about the fact, that she had never had the chance to yell at her father. Ava had never even learned his name. Somehow all those lost opportunities made her ache. And Ava knew her mother, despite being enraged, had truly cared about the guy. So Ava had toyed with the thought that maybe, someday, somehow, she could've cared about him too.
But he was dead. Just like Ava's mother. And she was alone in the world.
Somewhere at the back of her mind a voice whispered that she wasn't alone. She had a whole bunch of red headed relatives and Ava knew at least four that woukd be ready to be there for her. But at that moment Ava's negative feelings were overwhelming and she couldn't hear anything but her own racing pulse, as she half jogged half sprinted through the forest.
Ava hadn't gone to school for a couple of days and was just wandering in the forest, avoiding people and any kinds of interactions. Even now she dodged trees while running aimlessly. Eventually Ava hit her shoulder on a tree and fell down. She glared at the tree, and the grass under her palms started to die and nearly burn. Ava quickly stood back up, let out a small yell of frustration and began running again, though her lungs felt like they were on fire.
Eventually Ava had to stop, when her legs didn't carry her anymore. She collapsed on the ground by a tree, heaving in and out. She grimaced and covered her face with her arms, refusing to cry the tears that begged to fall from her eyes.

It was the end of the school day as Hal swerved his way through the corridors filled with students. So many people hurrying about their business but one face was missing. Since the Drakenhardt clan held a barbeque that Hal and his own clan were invited to, he had got on well with a girl of similar age to himself - Ava. The two had played frisbee and gotten to know each other over the evening but for the past few days, she was nowhere to be seen. It began to make Hal concerned as to why she was skipping school.

Wanting to make sure that she was alright, Hal tried to find her. As anyone would, he first went to her home, yet she wasn't there. Using his nose to aid him, he shifted into his half-dragon form: large ghostly wings, a winding tail and solid orange eyes. The scent brought him closer and closer to the forest. She has to be in there, he thought. Soaring high above the canopy, his eyes scanned the area for any red within the thicket.

After what seemed like forever, Hal finally spied a flash of scarlet. Beginning to dart towards the ground, he became a flurry of ice particles before hitting the ground, quickly slithering through the air until he reformed with an arm around the girl on the floor. His dragon features were no longer present after reforming. Worriedly, he talked softly to Ava. "Is everything alright?" Of course, it wasn't but the concern was there.

Ava could hear and smell Hal before he appeared next to her, arm wrapped around her. Why was she not surprised this guy had found her?
Ava didn't react at first, didn't jump away or lean into the touch, just buried her other hand in her hair and sighed heavily. Should she tell smurf? Ava didn't want to seem like she was whining. She hated showing weakness to people, even if they were people she trusted. And Ava had never cried in front of anyone aside from her mother. She had a feeling that if she decided to share what was in her mind she might very well cry.
    Oh, to hell with it.
Ava turned her head a bit to look at Hal, the guy actually sounded and looked worried about her. That was so weird. But Ava appreciated it.
    "My dad is dead."

Hal looked at her with concern as she spoke, not knowing what to say as a response. He imagined that a loss of someone like that would be devastating but he had never experienced death. It was also more difficult since Hal had never actually met his father at all, though he imagined it would be similar to the pain that he would feel if he no longer had his mum around; that pain would be considerable.

Still with his arm around her, Hal rested his other hand on her arm reassuringly. It was clear that she was upset and it made Hal wear a solemn expression. "How about we go inside and have a drink?" he suggested calmly. "It's no good being out here." He knew that if he experienced loss, he wouldn't want to be alone within the thicket of woodlands; he would prefer to have comfort, surrounded by the ones he loved for support. However, the two of them were quite different so maybe that was not the sort of treatment she wanted.

Ava was hugging herself tightly, and squeezing her arms so hard it hurt. Having Hal there helped her hold back all the negtive emotions that woyld've made her heat up. The guy was half ice dragon so burns would do some extra bad damage. And that was the last thing Ava wanted when he had taken the trouble to find her and try to make her feel better.
As Hal set his hand on Ava's arm she stopped squeezing as hard, and she made the quick notion that she'd probably have bruises later.

Ava shook her head when Hal suggested they went inside. That was also one of the last things she wanted to do now.
"It's not a good idea. I'm too messed up, I dunno what can tip me off. Here I can avoid burning anything or anyone to the ground."
Ava rubbed her face, groaning a bit, and finally she leaned into Hal a bit and hugged him tightly.
"I'm just so fucking pissed that I feel this miserable. I never even fucking knew the guy, I only knew that he broke my mom's heart. And now the bastard is trying to break mine too. That's not fair, that sucks."

Hal looked around. He did not agree that nothing could be burned since everything that surrounded them was made of wood and plants. It may be seen as undermining her if he disagreed and the last thing he wanted in the situation was to upset her even more - that would make things worse. What was best was to try to calm her down and cheer her up, though it would be a hard feat.

"I am sure that his death is not to spite you." Hal highly doubted Ava's father was dead because he wanted to make her feel miserable but neither of them had met the guy so there was no certainty. "It is normal to feel sad after the death of a relative, even if you haven't met them. Everyone leaves a bit of themselves inside you and that shapes who you are. Even though you never met him, he was still your dad." His words were meant to comfort, though he did not know whether they would have that effect.

"I never knew my dad either and it hurts that I've never had someone like that in my life to help me. Sometimes, I think that maybe he is dead - it would make it easier - but..." He didn't want to say that the hope that he may still be out there comforted him since she could no longer hold on to that hope. "It's holding on to the people in your life that you love that gets you through it." Hal loved his mum so much that he was grateful that he had that. Yes, having a dad would be even better but always longing for something you do not have makes a person miserable. It's the good in your life that counts.

Ava kept hugging Hal tightly for a moment longer, giving herself the luxury of physical contact, since it reminded her that she wasn't allowed to explode here or she could hurt someone. But when Hal started talking Ava pulled back a bit and listened, her eyes on the grass. The words made sense, Ava knew that. And yet they still pissed her off. Maybe because they made sense. Ava groanef out of frustration and started pacing, letting out angry dragon noises. Her temperature rose, but not so much it would've bothered Hal a lot.
"But I shouldn't feel sad 'cos of that asshole! He was a useless bastard who didn't have enough spine to own up when he knocked my mom up. He just fucking took off, Hal! That's the most cowardly thing you can fucking do! I hated him so much for so long and I still do! I shouldn't feel this way, I should be fucking glad he's gone! That he was...he was killed. Titus said he was killed..."
Ava's voice lost its energy when she repeated the words he was killed. That part really touched Ava, hurt her. She had sometimes said she'd kill the bastard with her own hands, but someone...actually did.
Ava grimaced, when the sadness rose up and tears wanted to flow. Ava didn't let them and went over to a tree. She pulled back and hit her head against it with great strength. Ava would not cry. Not because of that bastard.
Slowly Ava turned around. Her forehead wasn't bleeding but it would certainly be bruised later and that showed.
"You said that my dad a little bit of himself inside me, right? That part must be the rotten part of me that pushes everyone away, that just wants to run away from everything. The cowardly part."

Hal's eyes followed her as she paced, talking. He didn't like seeing his friends upset and it was painful for him to watch. Though, not as painful as he guessed it was for Ava. "What he did was wrong, yes, but maybe there were other reasons. Perhaps he wasn't the guy you think he is," he suggested timidly as to not rile her up. Sometimes it was very hard to read people, thus Hal always envied those with empathic abilities. Then you know how a person is truly feeling. His heightened senses gave him an indication but it wasn't a full picture.

Hal shot up as she hit her head against the trunk. "Hey! You'll hurt yourself," he said firmly but with sympathy. He just looked upon her with sadness. It was horrible to see her in that state and he felt helpless. "Listen to me, you are not cowardly. You are tough and brave and one of the strongest people I know." It was true that his family was full of fighters but Ava had a different sort of strength. She still held on even when she was alone. But she wasn't alone. At least, not anymore.

"Titus is there for you. It is not the same but he seems like he has been more of a father to you in such a short space of time than your actual dad has ever been. ...You have people who love you." He didn't want to reach out to her again. One, she was getting a bit hot which Hal could only just bear and two, he wasn't sure that she would appreciate it.

Ava could feel and see how timid and careful Hal was when voicing his statement about Ava's father, and still it made her glared at him and her heat shoot up momentarily. She growled and moved further away from Hal so her heat wouldn't damage him in any way and kept pacing and muttering.
"He was exactly the guy I think he is, what my mom thought he was. A shitpile of a person who didn't have any balls or pride whatsoever."
Ava growled again and kicked a rock lying on the ground so hard it shot through the nearby bushes like a bullet.

Ava's eyes hot filled with confused irritation and sorrow when Hal talked about Titus. She looked at the ground and squeezed her hands into fists so hard her knuckles were white and her nails penetrated the skin. Ava had pushed Titus away, of course she had. Ava was like that. Titus was a whole another issue, he and the Drakenhardts. Ava just couldn't understand how or why he or any other Drakenhardt cared about her. Hell, even Ralf, the resident lazyass, had stood up for Ava when that asshole mocked her. A normal person would accept the whole bunch, be grateful and not question it. But Ava couldn't help but feel that it was all temporary. That she was temporary, that they would get bored of her and throw her away. Ava knew that it wasn't so but it was all so confusing.
Ava missed her mom. Nothing had ever been confusing with her.

Ava sunk to the ground on her knees, her temperature still high but slowly lowering. Ava sighed and sunk her hands into her hair. It burned but she didn't care.
"I'm just...I can't accept it. That anyone would want anything to do with a brat like me. The Drakenhardts bear with me 'cos of my father, 'cos of that stupid surname. Without it I'd just be another orphan among a sea of orphans. No one would spare a second glance."

Hal kept his distance as she kicked the rock flying into the thicket. He did not want to get in her way - that could end badly. Instead, he thought it best to let her get her anger out a little before calming down to talk about it. He knew that she wouldn't intentionally hurt him but if he got too close, it may not be her choice. An accident could put him in the crossfire of another hurtling rock so he stayed back.

When she slumped down to the ground, Hal moved over to her and knelt beside her. "I think you would surprise yourself," he began. Hal did not consider her a brat at all. She was a very nice, yet somewhat boisterous at times but never a brat. "They don't love you just because of your name. Family is special. It goes beyond a sense of duty. Believe me when I say that Titus and the rest of the Drakenhardts love you." He would have landed another reassuring hand on her arm but he didn't want to set her off again. Instead, he just looked at her with those big orange eyes and a small smile.
