Regina was in trouble again. To make a long story short, a janitor had caught her and a much older student in a compromising position in an empty classroom. That same poor janitor had to clean up after them before reporting it back to the school.

The whole experience was horrific for Regina, to say the least. Waiting might have been even worse. She didn't know how the school would punish her for it this time, but she knew it was coming.

As she lay down in her bed reading one of her beauty magazines, she knew that knock on the door was coming. It was probably her new dorm parent, Finch. The bird man who talked funny.

    "Door's open."

She was in her pajamas, as comfy and relaxed as she could manage, given the circumstances. 5 packages of oreos sat next to her and one of them was empty. She was working through the second.

Finch did not, by the metrics of the island, look very human. Even if he was, in fact, fully human, few people would mistake him for one. His size was off, the shape of his body was off, and all those messy details.

What really mattered was that, for all his appearance issues, he had a fairly human mindset, and that was enough for him to have a fairly good idea of the connotations of Regina getting caught with an older student.

Maybe caught was the wrong word. It had implications. Found might be better.

Finch peeked his head in the door when she beckoned him in, his mask firmly in place as usual. There was no birds riding his shoulders on that particular day, which was a fairly common sign around the floor, but he had a hard time keeping things serious with birds whispering in his ear.

"Regina?" He called out, not coming too far into the small room. "We should probably talk about what happened."

    "Fine."

Regina scooted back on her bed and sat upright against the headrest, leaning back, curled up a little bit into a ball. He could either sit at the foot of her bed, or make his way around to her desk-chair.

A few bees were crawling around on her, now. Others kept a low profile in their usual posts by the entrances to the room. Regina was looking at the bee on her arm, now, not making eye contact with Finch. She knew she was going to get in trouble again, and she hated it. It wasn't fair. 'A place where anyone can be themselves' her pointy ass.

She liked Finch, though; she thought they had something in common between his birds and her bees. And his funny voice and mask were endearing, and he didn't make her call him 'Mister' anything. Most days, she was delighted to see him. All bubbly smiles and enthusiastic waves.

Finch made his way around to the desk chair, clambering up. Even Regina's short height meant the chair was a bit too tall for him to simply sit on, and it took a bit of doing to get himself actually seated. He didn't look as short as normal when he was sitting down, because the chair meant there was only so much hunching one could do.

"You are upset," Finch observed, with all the subtlety of an anvil dropping. "Did anyone else talk to you about this yet?"

What a weird way to bring it up.

"If you're talking about how I was screwing Aldo, then... just the janitor who was shouting at us. When they were shouting at us. So not really"

After hurriedly getting her clothes back on, Regina had jumped out the second story window and flown off. She hadn't tried getting in touch with Aldo, and he hadn't tried getting in touch with her.

The bee had climbed onto her hand, and she was still looking at it. Still not making eye contact with Finch. "How much trouble am I in?"

It was a damned good thing that Finch hadn't just been dropped into things without any sort of lessons, or he'd have drowned then and there. No, the school had made sure he got some sort of training, even if it was spotty and kind of patchwork. He'd gone for classes that covered the most important bits, and he still was going for classes to make sure he was as qualified in handling his dorm children as he was in handling his chemistry classes.

"You aren't," Finch said. "Even if the janitor was upset. You're under age, and the other student should have known better than to do what he was doing with you."

Finch's voice was just as croaky as ever, even if he was making an active effort to make himself appear more serious, his one hand resting on his knee.

Regina's reaction came in waves. At first, she was relieved. But then she thought about it some more, and it started to become so much worse. Aldo was going to hate her now. Everything was ruined.

"But... it was my fault!" she protested, finally looking at Finch. "Are you saying he's going to get in trouble and I'm not?"

It wasn't fair. He was going to go to jail, because of her, when she knew it was her fault. And he was going to hate her, and everyone was going to think she was a terrible person.

Finch ruffled his cloak in a manner highly reminiscent of a bird ruffling their feathers, resettling himself on the seat as he tried to process Regina's answer. No, he should have known this was coming. This was normal. Hadn't this been part of the lesson? Yes, yes it had. People often blamed themselves.

"Why do you think it's your fault?" He said. That was what they'd said to do, and he was still, at least for the moment, operating very loosely off the script they'd given him for this sort of situation.

Regina just shifted in her spot on the bed and frowned, the panic and frustration building in her. It had made perfect sense in her head at first. But as she tried to find words to explain it to Finch, it seemed harder and harder to pin down where she went wrong, and why it wasn't Aldo's fault. And worse, she had the feeling this was just because she wasn't good at explaining things, and so this would be yet another reason that it was all her fault.

After an uncomfortable silence, she managed: "I encouraged him. After we started talking about it. And I was flirty with him before that."

The frustration was obvious, even to someone as super fucking oblivious as Finch. Maybe a professional should have been sitting down with her, but a professional wouldn't have the relationship they had.

"But he still decided," Finch said. "Even knowing he shouldn't have been doing it. He shouldn't have been doing that with you. He was old enough to know better, even if another student encouraged him to do it."

Finch made a noise that was a lot like warbly coo.

"As they say, 'would you jump off a bridge if someone told you to'?"
