A hugely important part of every new beginning was exploration. Thus, every corner of the school grounds was graced with Allen’s presence as he investigated all that Starlight Academy had to offer. A beautiful courtyard, the dormitories of course, and even a…ball room, for some reason? Well, if he ever wanted to appease his parents, he’d take up waltzing or another archaic dance form, that should convince them that he was doing alright. He walked through the hallways filled with classrooms that he would try to avoid as much as possible in the future.

And then, finally, the complete polar opposite of his natural habitat: The library. His shrill whistling disturbed the peace and quiet of the book zoo. Rhythmic steps bounced along on the beat of the tune. Followed by more sound, in the form of shushes. These people didn’t know what they wanted, breaking their own holy silence to complain! Besides, he was ever so carefully walking the edge of what was allowed, being audible, but not so loud that he couldn’t claim ignorance. But he did stop whistling, hoping that the annoyed nerds would turn their attention back to their dusty paper stacks.

Allen dropped his bag on the ground and zipped it open, digging through the mess until he found his weapon of choice. A big white cannister, with a red, claxon-like topper. And his trusty roll of duct tape. He started taping the airhorn horizontally to the wall on the side of the main entrance, such that opening the door should – according to his spit balling calculations – create a concert of noise. One more layer, for good measure, and boom, the trap was complete.

Allen quickly dashed away to the wall on the opposite side, leaning against it with a massive, leatherbound book in his hands. He flipped it open near the end and stared at and over the letters. Hehehe. And now, we wait. Wait, why was this book written in some sort of cuneiform or Chinese? Ohh, he was reading Australia style, no wonder. He heard a door handle being pressed down and scrambled to flip his huge bulky book 180 degrees to the legit side. Totally inconspicuous.

The door swung slowly inward. Entering into the still atmosphere of the library came a girl so small she had to lean against the door, pushing it open with both hands and all her weight. It looked like something from a cartoon, how painfully slow the door crept towards the trap. It just barely bumped against the can, but that was all it took.

The girl didn’t seem to know how to react for the first nano-second after the ear-splitting shriek erupted from the door. He eyes widened in terror, before she catapulted herself into the air. Broad, black wings opened to their full size at her sides, but she only beat them two or three times before she spiraled out of control and crashed into one of the towering, book-covered walls.

The racket had long stopped by now. The little girl slid from where she clung precariously to the wall, and hit the ground with a soft thud. She stayed there, huddled on the floor with her huge ears pinned as far back as they seemed to go, her body wrapped tightly in the leathery blanket of her wings.

This was it. A premiere, his first attempt to shake things up at Starlight Academy. This was gonna be a hoot. A loud one at that. Everything was in place, so now all he had to do was wait. The door handle slowly moved down. Allen fumbled with his book trying to maintain his cover.

The door started to swing open. Opening. Slowly. Was still opening. It was like everything moved in sloooow-motion. Allen peeked up from over his book, saw a girl struggling to get the hefty wooden door to open. He almost went over there to help her, she seemed so helpless. But by then it was too late, she had managed.

Pweeeeep – blasted the air horn. Yesss, finally success! Then a big woosh, and a huge swirl of black as wings opened to catapult the girl up in the air. ‘What the flip...’ Blasts of air ruffled through his orange hair as she batted her wings wildly. Allen’s eyes widened in horror. What on earth was happening?!

Her crash created another disturbance in the silent library, and Allen felt a pang of guilt in his chest. He wanted to laugh it off, pretend like it was no big deal, but the little ball of vaguely human bat-girl was just too sad. Argh. He rushed over, carelessly dropping, almost throwing, the big book as he went. It crashed on the floor, the pages folding as it went, the spine cracking. Oh, who cares.

He crouched down next to bat girl, dodging the many books that had tumbled down with her crash. ‘A-are you ok?’ Allen stammered, looking around to see if there was anyone better equipped to deal with this situation. Didn’t look like it. The boy hesitated for a split second, then tenderly put his hand on her shoulder. He tried not to shudder or think too much about what he was touching. ‘Talk about a flying start, huh?’ he said next, in an idiotic attempt to make her feel better.

The girl stared at him with wide, dilated eyes. Her ears pricked upright, alert. She shrunk back as he drew near, so tense she flinched as she his hand meet her shoulder, then immediately reacted by baring thin, sharp canines in a silent hiss, not acknowledging, or really hearing, his comment.

But her aggression fell flat as her eyes simultaneously filled with tears. Her voice rose in a soft, thin wail. Shakily, her arms dropped from around her body, and instead, she held them out to him, wanting a hug.

People were staring now. Having first been startled by the air horn, and now, seeing the child’s distress, the surrounding readers were all looking over in concern.

Two huge, bright yellow eyes stared at him and Allen had to force himself to keep a friendly smile on his face. This shit was low-key creepy. He tried to make it better by comforting her, but this was not appreciated by the batgirl - and that was putting it lightly. She bared her sharp teeth and Allen let out a soft yelp of fear. ''Ah, sorry, I-'' he mumbled, pulling his hand back, instantly wanting to leave this whole situation alone. People were watching with judging eyes.

She held out her arms, and now it was his turn to flinch, afraid that she would decide to put those sharp teeth and claw-like fingers to good use to punish him for his attempted prank. But she seemed to have no ill intentions, and when he looked past the freaky physical aspects of her body, all that was left was a little girl. Scared. Tears in her eyes. And that was his fault.

Allen reached out to her in a tender embrace. He held her softly, not wanting to scare her any more. ''Hey, it's ok, it's ok,'' he shushed her, even though he wasn't even sure if she understood his words. Now that he wasn't directly looking at her, he could easily imagine her being just like his little sister Katherine, making him feel more at ease. ''It was just a little joke, you see? Just a silly joke by a silly boy. He didn't mean to scare you.'' Damn cuteness, making him feel guilty over what should have been an epic prank.

The girl clung tightly to the boy as he held her. She nestled her chin on his shoulder, and sniffled quietly. She seemed to be listening.

"Joke...?" she echoed, her childlike voice just barely above a whisper. So she did understand. And could even reply, at that.

    "It was a joke...?"

Allen had not visited many zoos in his lifetime, but he was pretty sure that nowhere you’d be allowed this close to bat wings as he was now. As a newcomer he was still not used to all the freaky beings that walked around on this island, although he was trying his very best to not let that show to the little girl. Besides, she was way cuter than the 8 foot tall skinless giant he had spotted just yesterday. So he bared with it. Maybe this was his penance for a bad choice of prank.

The girl’s voice was so soft and sweet, it made him feel even worse for blasting her ears with deafening sound earlier. ‘’Yeaahh, it was a silly joke,’’ he said, scratching his head and looking for an explanation. ‘’It was meant to be a surprise, just to startle someone a little bit, you know? I thought it would be funny, but I guess it worked too well..’’ He looked at her fluffy ears. Was that why she had reacted so strongly to the sound. ‘’You’re not mad, are you?’’

She looked between him, and reluctantly, the door. She could see now the air horn taped up behind it, and immediately deflated in relief, the tension melting off her limbs.

"Oh... It was a joke..." she repeated, more to herself than to him. She took a deep breath, and exhaled slowly. Pushing a strand of her sand-coloured hair from her face, she sat back, and finally looked up to him properly.

"I'm not mad," she replied quietly, her tone considerably more level. "Thank you for helping me. Um, I'm Isabelle!"

She offered her hand all proper-like. Her introduction was plenty awkward, but by the way she focused on his eyes and suddenly opened her posture, it wasn't hard to tell that she was trying her best to be friendly.

After repeated reassurance that it was just a joke she seemed to calm down a bit. Good, because if he had to explain his attempted prank even further he would have been at a loss, there simply wasn't much more to it than a stupid idea that went terribly wrong.

He felt ok letting go of her now, and they both sat back against the book cases. Allen smiled when she introduced herself. He grabbed her hand and shook it as officially as he could, yet careful not to hurt her. She looked so frail and breakable, he didn't want to risk it. ''Well, well, well, mademoiselle Isabelle,'' he rhymed with a melodic tone. ''I'm Allen and it's a pleasure to meet you. So, what ya doing here, Isabella?''

Her lips lifted into a little smile at his sing-songy greeting.

"Nice to meet you too, Allen. I came to look for a book to practice reading with. I've been learning how," she explained humbly. "My class books are a little too tricky, so my teacher told me to look for a... a book that tells a story," she described, forgetting the word for those kinds of books.
