10:50 pm. Ten more minutes until they could leave this hell hole.

Luckily, it was a slow night at the local burger joint. Usually friday nights were hopping with night owls and drunk college kids. But it was unusually quiet, which made the minutes tick by awfully slow.

    ”549…. 548… 547”
A young man standing in front of a cash register counted the seconds. His tired, grey eyes were transfixed to the screen before him. Not on the seemingly endless burger options, but rather the tiny clock in the corner.

”You know Cyril, watching the clock won’t make the time go by any faster.” A softer voice said to the other, he too standing in front of a register.

The good thing about hiring these boys was that, no matter what, there were twice the hands on deck for any job. The problem was that they couldn’t go too far from each other- because they were quite literally joined at the hip.

The two boys shared one pair of legs, though the one named Cyril appeared to be in control. Perhaps that’s what made the other boy more meek. For better, or for worse.

”Yeah. But at least I know how close I am to getting the hell out of here and telling people that their dumb complaints ain’t my problem.” Cyril huffed, adjusting his hat. He then proceeded to throw on a high pitched, nasally accent. ””Ummm, excuse me? My burger’s too soggy. If you don’t fix it in thirty seconds I’m telling your manager!”” He chuckled to himself, shaking his head. ”I swear to god if you weren’t here I was this close to telling that lady to take that burger and shove it up her a-”

”Hi! How can I help you?”

While Cyril was ranting, the boy with “LYRIC” embellished on his name tag noticed two customers entering the formerly vacant restaurant. Cyril looked at the two and grumbled. That rant would have to be saved for later.

"He didn't?" Azu asked as she opened the door to the fast food place for both her and Bel.

"Oh, he did..." Bel said with a wide mischievous grin as she flipped her long blond hair lightly over her shoulder.

"Ohh..." Azucena remarked as her eyes went wide as she thought about what Bel had told her about the guy she had just met. "And are you going to see him again?" she asked with keen interest.

"I certainly hope so," Bel said as they approached the counter to order something to eat.

And when the young man asked them if he could help them, Bel looked away from Azu, having enjoyed shocking her slightly younger friend, and smiled at the young man behind the counter.

"I don't know, can you help me?" Bel asked teasingly.

"Bel!" Azucena remarked as she glanced at the young man apologetically. "She has an odd sense of humour, sorry, don't mind her..." she said as she eyed her friend.

"Azucena, stop being such a stick in the mud. I am sure they know I was joking, right?" she asked them with a wide grin.

The two seemed to be engrossed in a conversation, so it was a bit of a relief for Cyril. He didn’t want another write up for being ‘unprofessionally abrasive’. Lyric fortunately seemed to take the situation. And although he could put on an act for customer service, it was a bit tricky when people threw him curveballs to his pre-programmed dialogue.

”Oh! Um… I sure hope I can?” He chuckled nervously, knowing it was a joke yet still looking to his brother for guidance. Cyril just kept quiet, rolling his eyes.

”Don’t mind him. He’s antsy because our shift is almost over.” Lyric said nonchalantly. ”Anyway, would you like to try our special? Five dollars will get you our new double-three-quarter-pounder-bacon-deep fried-burger.”

Cyril chuckled, folding his arms across his chest.

”Jesus dude, you trying to give these people hypertension?” Before Lyric could protest, he smirked. ”Besides I’m pretty sure the bacon comes from circus animal meat. The only thing you can trust in this damn place is the fries.” He was blunt but… honestly, probably not lying.

”...Uhhuh… So um… What will it be?”

"You are joking, right?" Bel peered questioningly at the young man that had just mentioned the circus meat. "Surely they'd not be using... " here she couldn't even fathom what animal they'd use to make a burger. "Boris the belly dancing bear to make their bacon burgers?" Bel asked jokingly, revelling in the alliteration of the silly sentence.

"Oh my god, Bel..." Azucena said as she flashed her a look that said her joke was in bad taste. "That's a horrible thought," she stated.

"Azu, he implied," she said gesturing to Cyril, "So I asked," she remarked reasonably as she slowly and painstakingly scanned the menu on the wall. "Is the ice cream safe?" she asked Cyril suddenly.

Cyril laughed dryly. At least they had a sense of humor. Or, one of them did. He tended to play off his sarcasm very plainly, so this thing sort of happened often. ”I’m kidding, I’m kidding.” He then looked Bel, smirking broadly. ”Probably.”

Taking things more seriously, Lyric gently elbowed Cyril’s side. And here he thought he was in a rush to get out of here. ”Yes, our ice cream is safe.” Lyric said softly. He looked back at the ice cream machine. It wasn’t broken today, surprisingly. ”It’s 99 cents for a cone. We have chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.” He paused, gesturing to Cyril to do the ice cream while he rang them up. ”What would you like?”

"Probably kidding? Wow, that sounds ominous..." Bel said with an amused grin, quirking an eyebrow at Cyril.

"Strawberry for me, and for you, Bel?" Azucena said, turning to face her friend as she asked her what type of cone she wanted to get.

"Uhm, yeah, a strawberry cone sounds good," Bel admitted, as she thought about the choices, not in the mood for chocolate ice cream, and thinking vanilla was quite boring. "Actually, an I get that in a cup instead of a cone?" Bel asked, deciding then she didn't want the cone just the ice cream.

”No problem. That’ll be two dollars.” Lyric said with a gentle smile, holding out his hands to receive the money. He looked at his brother, nudging his shoulder. ”Two strawberry, one in a cup and the other-”

”I know, I know. I can hear just fine.” With that, Cyril maneuvered so that he could face the ice cream machine. It was an interesting move, because Lyric suspended himself to lean over the front counter, twisting his torso so he could rest his own weight on one hand on the ledge. Cyril’s body was busy getting the ice cream. Unlike Lyric, he was completely independent of his brother, which meant he was the one taking on more of the active roles. ”You guys are here pretty late. If I were free, I’d be out doing goon shit.”

With his brother’s words, Lyric looked a little worried. ”Yeah. It gets pretty dodgy out here late at night. Cyril over here likes the thrill of danger. I definitely don’t.” Lyric said, shifting his position once Cyril turned back around with the ice cream. ”What about you guys? What brings you out here this late at night?”

Bel paid for both ice creams as Azucena took her cone from Cyril and held on to Bel's container of strawberry ice cream as she gave the young man, Lyric, the correct change.

"We are just heading back to the Academy, taking the scenic route basically, getting some food, ice cream..." Bel explained. "We were at the community center, hanging out with a few friends, that kind of thing..."

"You two working late, tonight?" Azucena asked as she took a lick of her cone before it started melting.

Lyric counted the money, pleased that he was given correct change. He opened the drawer and put the money in, giving them the receipt afterwards. Once the transaction was complete, he assumed his usual position- his arm hooked around his brother’s shoulder, supporting his own body weight.

”Damn. I would have taken you two as troublemakers.” He joked, though he did like to imagine what customers did in their free time before coming in. Making up stories tended to make the shift go by faster, anyway.

When asked by the other girl, Cyril remembered that he was distracted by the time. He looked down. 11:01. Shit, they were late!... To leave.

”Actually, would you look at that. We get off at eleven. Time to dip” He said, looking at the clock on his screen. With that, he was officially no longer obligated to entertain these customers, but…

Before he had the chance to say anything, Lyric piped up almost nervously, reading his mind. ”Do you guys mind if we tag along? Since uh, we’re going the same way and all. ”

"And who says we aren't two merry mischief-makers in disguise?" Bel retorted back laughingly. "Just because we look harmless, doesn't mean we are, you know?" she pointed out jokingly, quirking an eyebrow when he told them it was quitting time and he was going to bounce.

Then when Lyric asked if they could tag along back to the dorms, Bel looked at Azu and Azu at Bel, and both girls smiled. "Sure, why not?" Bel said with a grin as Azu nodded in agreement.

"We'll just wait for you two outside then?," Azucena asked Lyric questioning.
