It had grown late. The sun had set many hours ago and stars now littered a black velvet sky. The moon had risen showing her pale face to the world, casting her gentle light on the world and illuminating the water in a rather eerie way. The smell of salt filled the air, and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore provided a soothing melody to break the silence. The white sand was cool to the touch, but not cold. It was peaceful out here, soothing even. A good place to be for those who simply wanted to think.

Thomasin sighed as she sat in front of the fire she had made. She had spent some time collecting stones and driftwood to make herself a simple fire pit, using the stones to make a ring in the sand and pilling the wood nearby to keep the fire going. She had used her fire breath to start the fire with ease, though for nearly twenty minutes after she had hiccuped sparks. Luckily no one had been present to see them.

She pulled her knees to her chest as she watched the flames burning in front of her. Her gaze had not left the orange flames for some time now, and she had become lost in thought. A week ago she had been in Paris, living her life, running her business, and being herself. Somewhere along the lines all of that had been messed up. She had been spotted as the scouts had explained. The concept of the veil was at risk of being breached by her existence. Even now she didn't fully understand what that meant. She had been there for 13 years, how was she a threat to anything that some abnormal people on some island had. Up until then, she had no idea that others like her even existed. She wasn't a threat.

Despite her protests, they had insisted and even when she tried to flee, they had forced her. Now she was a prisoner here. She wasn't able to fly far enough to get back to her home, nor did she believe that she would be allowed to leave without a great deal of resistance. For now, she was stuck here, and that meant she would be forced to make the best of this situation, whether she liked it or not.

She sat a while longer in silence. Every so often her gaze would slip from the fire to stare longingly at the ocean. She was frustrated and saddened. Most of all though, she was lonely. Back home she had managed to make a few friends. People who had known her, and even allowed herself to care for. She wondered now if they even knew if she was gone. Had one of them been the one to report her? Maybe they had never been her friend, to begin with. She wondered now, how she could even consider starting over. What would she do? Even the apartment she had been given felt like a cage to her.

Another sigh slipped free from her lips as she returned her gaze to the fire.

Rey needed time to think. Day after day every attempt he made to contact the creature directly was met with failure. No matter what he did or how he did it, Rey never seemed to be a step closer to his goal. He wondered if this was the creature’s true intention. To torture him like this while he tried to right his wrongs. Rey wouldn’t be surprised if that was actually it. How long had he done this dance? The places differed through out the years but it was always functionally the same.

Rey looked up at the stars, his black eyes showing no reflection as if they consumed any hint of light. He rarely slept anymore, often just collapsing when his body forced him to finally sleep. How many times had he looked up at those stars? He could name every constellation in the sky by now. Rey took a long sigh and walked across the shore, staring at the sand. He would only stop when he noticed that an small area of the beach was illuminated. As he looked over he would see the fire, and the girl.

Rey thought of what to do, trying to think if he should ignore her or talk. Rey eventually decided to talk and approached the fire carefully. She had looked lonely and Rey thought she might enjoy company. “Beautiful night isn’t it? You can see the stars much more clearly here than many places in the world.” Rey said as finally reached the fire. He continued to stand and turned his eyes to the girl “What is your name?”

Thomasin had been lost in thought. So deeply so that she hadn't noticed the approach of a stranger. Even as he neared close enough for the light to illuminate his face, she took no notice. It wasn't until he spoke that she stirred looking up at him with surprise. At first glance, he didn't appear to be threatening. His tone and even choice of words supported that.

"Oui, c'est une belle nuit." ((Yes it is a beautiful night)) Her voice trailed off as her gaze returned to the stars above. It hadn't even occurred to her that she had replied to him in her native tongue and that he might not be able to understand her. That was one of the problems she had since coming here. Yes it was true she could understand and speak English well enough, but if caught off guard her responses would often be in French. "Je suis Thomasin. Et qui êtes-vous?" ((I am Thomasin. And who are you?)) Even now she remained oblivious to any language gap she may have accidentally created.

Her orange eyes returned from looking skyward to rest on the stranger again as she gestured to the fire with a nod. She wasn't one to object to the company, and if he was as tired as he appeared, perhaps he could do with a few moments of peace by a fire. "
Asseyez-vous près du feu et reposez-vous un moment"
((Sit by the fire and rest a moment)) She would say while watching him with interest.

Rey smiled as the young woman looked up him surprised. He wasn’t expecting to spook her, she must had been thinking very hard. With how close he was now Rey took notice of her more reptilian features. Immediately he assumed she was a dragon or was a species closely related to dragons.

When she spoke Rey was slightly surprised but he understood every word she said. As he was from Europe as well he took the liberty of learning a few languages, one of which was French. He wasn’t the best at speaking it but he could definitely understand what she was saying. “I am Rey Bether but you may just call me Rey. A pleasure to meet you Thomasin.”

Rey took a seat next to Thomasin by the fire and chuckled a little. “I’m supposing you are from France yes? I’m from England but I’ve visited France a few times. It is quite a beautiful country if I do say so myself”
