The Sideralis family had sequestered themselves in the study, and for once, there was no butler allowed. Jugemu had been dismissed for the night, and his father had been left to stand in the hall, watching the heavy wooden doors as he waited to be called.

He wasn't called for a very long time.

The Sideralis's continued to talk for almost an hour--at one point voices briefly rising in what sounded a whole lot like an argument--and only almost twenty minutes later did the door crack open, with Evan emerging from the room and quickly shutting the door behind him.

He looked fine. A little bit tired, but fine.

"Could you please go get Jugemu for me?"

He stayed where he was, back up against the door as he waited, making no effort to move. He wasn't the butler's master--that would be his parents--but he still held rank within the house just the same.

The Sideralis butler didn't seem to think twice when the young master appeared and requested for his son's presence. Immediately he turned and promptly headed towards the servants quarters, not giving the request a second thought.
Jugemu approached Evan, his father following just a few steps behind him before returning to his post, and he dipped his head in deference. It was incredibly late, past Jugemu's usual hours really, but he didn't mind being summoned at this hour. He was ready to serve at any time if need be. Still, the sleep was in his eyes and he wasn't completely awake -- he'd been sleeping when his father had woken him.

"What can I do for you?" he asked quietly, making sure his voice sounded clear and non-drowsy.

Jugemu's father watched the both of them from where he stood, still waiting for a command.

Evan was tired. He was only going to be more tired by the time the morning rolled around, but there was no other way. Not really. He'd sat there for almost ten minutes, trying to wrap his head around things. Around what was the best option, the best way out.

Jugemu had said his allegiance was to Evan, not the Sideralis family, and now Evan was going to find out how true that was.

"Come inside," Evan said, pulling the door ever so slightly open to let Jugemu in.

All three Evans were inside the room, a universally terrible decision that Evan rarely made. He almost always had one off somewhere else, just in case something happened. This was probably the first time Jugemu had seen all three in a room, but he was unlikely to recognize the significance, as Evan had kept it a very firm secret just how many he could make.

One was standing not far from the door, his arms folded across his chest, his face sour. The other was sitting with his back to the door, his head only barely visible over the back of the couch.

The room smelled ever so faintly of blood.

"What happens to a butler once things are done? Do they just move to the next person in line in the family, or?" The Evan closest to the door asked once the door itself had been closed behind Jugemu.

As Jugemu stepped into the room, all of the training he'd done in the military jolted him awake as he became increasingly aware that something was wrong. To start, the hour that he'd been summoned was... odd. But that alone wasn't enough to cause suspicion -- what was concerning was the fact that there were three Evan's. For a moment it was a little overwhelming, to be in the presence of three Masters. It was something straight out of Jugemu's dreams -- err, nightmares.

But past that thought, he had never seen all three of Evan in one room, and that. That was cause for concern.

For all this time he'd known this new Evan, he had never let three be in the same place. Not in front of Jugemu.

"Decommissioning a Sideralis butler is unheard of," he said calmly, eyes slowly moving around the room as he tried to figure out what was wrong. "But when the Sideralis master dies, it's honored tradition for my family to commit seppu-... suicide."

This question was another sign that something was wrong.

"You can't fire me," he reminded Evan, trying to stay calm. Technically Evan could abandon the family, like Evaristus did, but Jugemu still would be his servant whether he wanted him or not.

    Oh. Suicide. Hn.

Both visible Evan's looked unhappy with that, exchanging a glance between each other for a brief moment before the one with it's arms crossed turned it's attention back to Jugemu.

"Does that always happen? Because, quite frankly, that honored tradition is bullshit. Is there some way to just... not do that?"

That was an unfortunate kink in his plans, wasn't it?

The unhappy expressions on Evan's faces were confusing and concerning for Jugemu.

"I don't -- I don't... know? It's always been done this way," he said hesitantly, brows furrowing. "It's how it's always been. I don't think myself or my father could imagine another way. To us, it's the natural course of action."

Jugemu was getting weary of playing along and pretending that everything was okay when it clearly wasn't. He couldn't see what these questions had to do with anything.

"Evan..." he said calmly, patiently, making sure to use the right name this time. "What's going on?"

There was no way things were going to go well. There was no version of events that didn't end with... with what? With Jugemu's father dead, from the sounds of it. From a lot of people very upset and angry.

"I killed my parents," one of the Evan's said, and it would probably take a moment for Jugemu to realize that it wasn't either of the ones standing that had spoken. Instead, it was the one sitting on the couch, his head hung forward.

The one in front of Jugemu grimaced.

"We need to know how good the lawyers for the family are, and if they'd even work in this case. Are they on my parents payroll, or are they on the family payroll?"

    Evan killed his parents.

    Evan... killed... his parents.

Jugemu's ears were ringing. His heart pounded in his chest as he looked around the room, taking a deep breath. Ah, he could smell it, that faint metallic scent that reminded Jugemu of a handful of pennies: blood.

For a moment, Jugemu froze up.

There was no question where his loyalty lay. It was his duty to help maintain the Sideralis legacy, yes, and yet always from the moment he was born it was his job to serve Evaristus and Evaristus alone. No matter what he chose, no matter the path his Master was take, Jugemu was bound to follow him even into darkness if it had to be.

    But this... this was...

    Jugemu was angry.

    He ignored Evan's question.

"For generations, my family has served yours," he said quietly, barely biting back the frustration and dismay in his voice. "And we've done so peacefully. My whole life I was preparing for you, to serve you, just like my father and my grandfather and my great grandfather and onwards."

    He clenched his fists.

"Why? Why did you do this?" he asked, the anger and grief palatable. But he wasn't grieving over Evan's parents... he was grieving over the path that had been chosen. The path he now had to follow. "Evaristus left, and you've murdered your parents. Why couldn't either of you just... accept the way things are?!"

His voice was slightly raised, now. Not enough to be a yell, but it was certainly the loudest Jugemu had ever gotten around Evan.

"Of all the stupid things --"

    He wanted to strangle him.

    He squeezed his fists tighter.

    "You... why? Why."

Jugemu had wanted this, since he was a child.

    He'd dreamt of this.

    He'd dreamt of Evan.

And now it was all ruined.

    So why?

Truly, Evan hadn't known Jugemu had it in him. He'd expected... well, acceptance. For Jugemu to nod and act like it was no big deal, because that was what he'd always done. He'd never shown much reaction before. He'd been agitated at worst, but that had always been subdued, like every emotion Jugemu showed was muffled under a thick blanket.

But this was new. Genuine anger. Not yelling, but anger, thick and hot and clear as day, even if it was obvious Jugemu was trying to stamp it down.

The Evan by the door looked uncomfortable. The one in front of Jugemu was doing a bit better, but only just. There was still a thin layer of discomfort, of I have to keep it together and figure this out, but he could at least manage a response.

"They were going to send me back. If they send me back, I die. So I wasn't going to let them. It was me or them, and I chose me."

Selfish, maybe, but his parents had never been good people.

Jugemu wasn't sure what he'd expected to hear Evan say, but it wasn't that.

Jugemu blinked slowly and took a deep breath, digesting what he'd been told.

It was hard to wrap his brain around.

If it was him in Evan's position, would he have done the same? Or would he have accepted his fate and gone back to a world of hell just to be an obedient servant?

    ... There was no telling.

"...I understand," he said softly, eyes dropping to the ground as he tried to process the precarious position they were now both in. He shook his head, sighing, and he began to pace the room in hopes to digest what the situation was and perhaps figure out what the next step would be.

As he paced, he saw them. The bodies.

"...What did you do?" he asked quietly, his words steeped in dread. "How did you do it?"
