Li Jia An was many things -- scientist, teacher, lazybones couch potato -- but she wasn't social. Not at all. Who was Eilonwy Rice? How did she pronounce her name? Had she even seen her around before?

An was pretty sure the answer to all those questions was a solid 'no', but she did her best anyway. She was also pretty sure that as a teacher, she wasn't allowed to give her kid any gag gifts. Or inappropriate things. Or hell, even vaguely-shaped objects that could be misconstrued as sex toys.

So what could she give Rice?

The wrapped gift sitting in front of her stared right back up at the teacher. Jia An was dressed in her usual sweater/shirt combo, brown flats planted squarely on the floor. By now she was nicely settled into the Academy; she hung out at the library practically all the time, and she felt at home. She was sat at a table somewhere near the front of the library -- wouldn't want to make Eilonwy walk too far, after all, and she might not even know who An was -- hands steepled beneath her chin, observing the passers-by.

Her wings were hidden, brown eyes placidly watching time go by. At her feet lay another gift -- also nicely wrapped, about the size of a pillow. What was it? Well.

Eilonwy was about to find out.

Eilonwy was absolutely giddy for this. She hadn't don't a secret Santa thing in a few years and she had learned that it was a regular tradition on the island? That was in-freakin-credible! It had helped that the person she had gotten was a teacher, so meeting up was easy peasy.

The question then had come to be, what would she get this person? This Jia An. She had had a few ideas, but it had been the memory of her mother's advice on gift giving that had helped make the decision.

She stepped into the main lobby of the library, holding the bag with His An's gift. It was a simple brown paper bag decorated by hand with colorful paper cutouts and swirls of metallic paint and glitter. Some of Eilonwy's finest work, if she did say so herself.

The invisible girl was dressed in a bright red dress and green and white striped leggings with big fur trimmed boots. But the finishing touches on the was the point green hat adorned with bells at the tip. Like a Christmas elf! She looked around, realizing now that she didn't know what her gift recipient looked like. Well, only one way to find her.

"Heellooooooo! I'm looking for a Little Jia An?! Are you here, Miss?"

Eilonwy hoped that her secret Santa partner hadn't forgotten about her.

"No," said Jia An, "Jia An's in the science labs."

"I'm joking," she said almost immediately after. An waved over at the... floating mass of clothes? Well. At least that settled finding her gift buddy, even if the kid was invisible and small and very loud. From her dressing choice, it looked like Eilonwy was a girl with an unrivalled vivaciousness. An had no intention of challenging that enthusiasm, so she simply gave the floating clothes an encouraging smile.

Reclusive as she was, An had surprisingly practically perfected the art of appearing chiller than she was. Her lazy grin was turned on the clothes, eyeing them and their unseen owner. A hat floated above the shoulders of the dress, bells jangling with every step she took.

Seeing the effort Eilonwy put into her decoration, Jia An felt somewhat bad that her own packaging was rather plain. Both packages were wrapped in plain brown paper — the recycled kind, not the fancy kind — which she thought gave them a quaint, old-fashioned look. She’d written Eilonwy’s name in small, thin block letters with black ink on them. Still, it was what was inside that counted, right?

"Miss Rice, I presume." Straight and to the point. By this time she didn’t think much of the invisible girl; she’d seen enough weirdness in the Academy already. ”Have a seat.”

Eilonwy's hat jingled as she suddenly turned her head in the direction of the person calling out her name and then jingled again when a librarian shushed her. Offering a stage whispered apology, she bounded over to where Jia An was and took a seat cross from her.

"Hi there! It's really nice to meet you, Miss Li." Her voice was cheery and had an excited lilt to it as she set her bag onto the table. "I'm Eilonwy. I'm really glad you didn't forget about our gift exchange. This is really exciting!"

An smiled. She was relieved -- too relieved -- when Eilonwy said her name herself, so that An didn't have to say it first and risk messing it up. She'd envisioned how it would go -- Eilonwy would meet her and An would try to greet the student and fail spectacularly, and there her career would go. Goodbye, teaching stint. Goodbye, confusing names. Goodbye, cruel world. But hey, at least the kid said it for her.

She lifted a brow as the bag floated onto the table. Up close, it was even more garish impressive. In return, she set her package on the table too. It was rectangular and book-sized. Because it was. A book. "Charmed," the teacher responded. "Li Jia An, but you already knew that." She excluded the bits about her degree, not wanting to sound like a pomp. It was better to go about unnoticed and casual, really; you learnt so much more that way.

    "Shall we?"

An snapped her fingers. The smaller package was in her lap; the larger one appeared suddenly on the library table. It was probably bigger than Eilonwy's torso. It weighed 5kg -- An knew from intimate experience -- and it was wrapped in the same brown paper her smaller one was. She took great care to hide the small one from the kid, intending to give it to her...

...After she'd seen the first one.

Eilonwy was smiling ear to ear, though that wasn't visible to Jia An. She let out a surprised noise at the size of the package her gifting partner had produced from think air on the table between them. "This is for me? Wow that's... incredible. How'd you do that, are you some kind of witch Miss Li?"

No wait, she didn't want to bombard the woman with questions. "Er... I mean. Sorry. I get overexcited. Mum used to say I was as excitable as a pixie in the sugar bowl."

Coincidentally, Eilonwy had never seen a pixie in their sugar bowl. But with the sugar that mysteriously went missing, she was sure there was one. Anyway, she pushed her own gift bag towards Jia An and gestured for her to open it. In the meantime she struggled to pull her own gift closer to herself. It weighed a good bit.

Jia An's gift, when she opened it, was covered in brightly colored tissue paper to hide the contents. Inside however was a ridiculously long, hand knitted scarf. Most of the material was dark blue, like the night sky, but there were painstakingly done constellations in silver yarn all throughout it. The craftsmanship was definitely amateur.

Underneath that was a book of children's fairytales. It had been one of Eilonwy's favorites as a child, in fact. "Merry Christmas, Miss Li!" she said, beaming in an almost aidibau fashion at the woman across the table.
