A couple of weeks had passed since Euphemia's arrival at the campus, yet she still found herself unable to think of it as a home. While she calmly strode along the path to the dorms, she still found her eyes darting around her, scanning her surroundings, noting little details. It was an alertness that had been drilled into her since childhood, to be aware of one's surroundings when in unfamiliar territory. She had learned the layout of the school by now and was still taking her time getting used to the city itself, but she felt no less secure with this information.

The other students appeared in her vision highlighted by their souls, bright lights that clustered together in groups around and inside the building. She had noticed how they all found their little groups, the sense of camaraderie they seemed to feel together, even the enmity they sometimes felt to others outside the group. She thought it was unusual. When she served in the order, most of the members seemed to keep a distance from each other. There was a sense of unity, as they all worked towards a single purpose, but it was always cold and professional. There was none of the friendliness that many of the students seemed to feel towards each other.

    She still didn't understand it.

By the time she'd entered the dorms, she'd found herself distracted, reflecting on how unusual her surroundings were. She was so deep in thought that she didn't even check to see if anyone else was on her floor as she walked into the lounge.

Flipping through a natural sciences textbook, turning the pages absentmindedly, Bel was sitting in an armchair with her legs dangling over the armrest as she attempted to catch up on her homework. Not an easy feat as her mind wandered constantly to more exciting things.

Stretching a little, tilting her head back while looking up at the ceiling, Bel noticed all the white squares that lined the ceiling in neat rows. Feeling a need to procrastinate a bit more, Bel started to count the tiles in the overhead ceiling..."Ninety-five, ninety-six..." she counted, her voice trailing off when she noticed a tall lanky, and fairly pretty girl, Euphemia, who she had seen at the orientation with their dorm parent, enter the dorm lounge

"Hey, you're looking a bit glum?" Bel stated as she watched Euphemia from her comfortable spot in the armchair, "What' up?"

Hearing her speak, Euphemia was finally snapped out of her reverie, standing back up straight, neutral expression covering her face.

"Ah, Bel, my apologies. I did not realise you were here. I do not wish to disturb you."

It occured to Euphemia that she didn't know much about her roommate. Normally upon arriving at the dorms she would simply stay in her room, keeping to herself. But since Celeste seemed to think interacting with others would help her improve, she thought she should try, at least.

"I...do not think I am glum?" She said, slightly unsure of the meaning of the word. "I am just still not entirely accustomed to this school yet. There is a lot for me to get used to.

"Believe me, you are not disturbing me, not at all," Bel said with a shake of her blonde head, snapping shut her textbook grateful for the interruption. She couldn't concentrate on the subject at hand. Maybe later she'd try again, though she doubted photosynthesis would be anymore exciting in a few hours from now.

"Okay, so not glum," Bel said as she sat up properly and eyed Euphemia, "Just bewildered by everything, I get it..." she told her. Bel actually did get the whole culture shock thing. She had kind of had her moments of apathy and adjustment when she arrived on the island.

    (Not a problem!)

"Indeed," She nodded, stepping inside. She sat on the lounge across from Bel, sitting up straight with her usual polite posture. "Truthfully, I am still quite unsure of what to do with myself during most of the day."

She took the moment to size Bel up, eyes quickly roaming up and down her body, studying her. When they had first met, it had been with the rest of the girls in the dorm. She hadn't had a chance to properly observe her in much detail. She noted her body language, her expression. Noted how she seemed relaxed, confident, a little bored.

She also noted that Bel was quite beautiful, though Euphemia didn't seem to feel the same sort of attraction she had when Elisa had forced those emotions onto her with her powers. She had never put much thought into other peoples appearance before, she wondered if her own lack of a reaction was strange.

"I do not wish to pry," She spoke, with her usual formal tone. "But I am curious, was your transition similar to mine?"

The young goddess regarded Euphemia for a brief moment, unsure anymore what people's true nature was. She was sure she had seen Euphemia's nature a few days ago, but it was waning, and she decided not to depend on that anymore. Bel knew her ability was becoming a hindrance more than a blessing as Samhain drew exponentially closer and her powers become less.

"You aren't from here. I take it," she said her Welsh accent very slight as she spoke and placed the book on the table, taking in Euphemia's regal bearing, almost deferential in nature also, Bel had the feeling she had been part of something bigger than her.

"I can't say if they are similar or not," she admitted not sure exactly what Euphemia's background was, "I spent years training to be the goddess incarnate of Beltane. Sort of cloistered away at times as the druids and goddess honed my abilities," she told the girl in front of her thoughtfully as she sat back in her armchair.

"I am not sure if you can relate to that or not, but coming here broke with everything I had known. All the rituals, traditions, customs, everything..." she told her. "I was not used to not having something to do basically." she confessed.

"A Goddess? I see..." She tilted her head to the side, curious. She remembered that Bel had introduced herself as being named for a goddess, but she thought it was just a name. If she was still with the order, they might have considered her a heretic for her words.

Still, her upbringing was quite a contrast. Bel was obviously considered important, possibly even revered, if she was raised to be a goddess. In comparison, Euphemia couldn't be considered lower in terms of hierarchy, in value.

"...I believe I can, actually." She eventually spoke, closing her eyes, her own slavic accent far more pronounced. "I was raised into an order of monster hunters within the catholic church. I was trained to be a tool, a weapon to be used against all manner of unholy beings. I have no other purpose, for my own sin is far too great to be worthy of anything else."

She still spoke in present tense, even if she wasn't part of the order anymore, it was what she believed. She opened her eyes, looking almost uncertain.

"But now I am here. My former superior told me I am no longer of the order. So...I am not sure what purpose I serve now."

Bel frowned at Euphemia's words. One of the first things she had been taught was that everything had a purpose. All life had a purpose, and she was the goddess - or goddess incarnate - of love and life, and Euphemia's words actually hit a nerve, chord... something.

"That is not true, Euphemia," Bel sat up straight, "I take no issue with other religions, gods... but I do take issue with the fact that you were used as a tool and discarded, made to feel you have no purpose later," her eyes flashing with anger. Looking at Euphemia again, Bel tried to see her worth, and couldn't... it frustrated her and made her curse Samhain once again.

'You have a purpose, that much I know," Bel told her firmly, "You just have not found it yet." she said with a nod.

She blinked, shifting back in her seat, seeming to shrink a little under her gaze. With the frustrated way Bel looked at her, she thought she was mad at her.

"I am sorry, I did not mean to upset you." She looked down. This was the second time she had made someone angry explaining herself. To Euphemia, her own lack of value was a part of her life that she had long ago accepted to be fact. Yet, people she'd met on the island always reacted so strongly when she said it. It was one of the most confusing things that had been happening to her. Was it her fault? She knew she never truly understood people, maybe what she was saying was offensive somehow?

"However, perhaps you are right." She said, recovering her composure. "Before he left me here, my superior told me I would need to learn how to live my life... it's quite possible that this is what he was talking about."

Bel saw the change, the folding in upon oneself, in Euphemia and immediately felt bad. She had scared the girl. Bloody hell, Bel mentally cursed to herself, angry that she was so quick to anger lately. The month of Beltaine always seemed to bring her problems...

"Look, sorry... " Bel started again, looking at her apologetically, her anger slowly dissolving, "I am not angry with you," she admitted with a sigh, "I am frustrated, no, not frustrated... more like indignant on your behalf because you were treated the way you were..." she told her.

"I.., well, no, not me, but Beltaine, the goddess in me," she explained knowing it probably sounded strange, "Has seen these cults before over the centuries, and how they induct their members, making them believe they are nothing without their leaders..." Bel said as she adjusted herself, crossing her legs as she leant forward.

"A truthful and just diety or following empowers their members, not reduces them to thinking they are worthless." she said gently.

"And yes, living your own life is part of being your own person," Bel agreed, "But first you need to believe that you are worth something, Euphemia..." she told her.
