Group projects usually sucked. At West, Matilda had usually been the one pulling all of the weight in the group, while her partners sat on their phones and waited patiently for her to earn them their A. Here, at least she usually enjoyed the subject material. She couldn’t say about the other students yet, although everyone she had met thus far seemed at least a bit more happy to be here than your usual high school student, save for maybe Diego.

Today, for instance, they were grouped into pairs and tasked with making a little presentation, comparing and contrasting their powers. Strengths, weaknesses, that kind of thing. Meek as she was, Matilda was struggling to come up with any weaknesses to her powers. Her chart was full to burst on the “Pros” side, and nearly empty on the “Cons” end of the spectrum. The soul addition to that particular side was “Preparation required,” helpfully scrawled by the instructor when they saw Matilda’s pride was holding her back.

She sat there, a book about Merlin laid across her lap, flipping through it idly as she looked to her project with mock exhaustion.
”Well, I think I’m just about done here. Almost done with yours?” She asked her partner, flipping the book shut.

Kon hated group projects. Before coming here, he did everything by himself. Now he had to work with others and hope they were as productive about the work as he was. So far, he has experienced a mix of great and awful partners. Despite having a fair amount of good partners, he still hated that he had to work with others.

That didn't show on his bright face. He smiled widely as he worked on his project. They were both working by themselves for the most part. Good. He didn't want to have to keep pushing someone else to pick up the pace and stop lazing about.

Unfortunately, this project was difficult. A week or two ago, this would've been easy-peasy. Now it was awful. The pros and cons of his powers were easy to figure out, but he was quick to learn that his shape-shifting was the usual normal.

Pros: I can look however I want, varying powers, teaching me about other species and their cultures, forces me to interact with people to become a new species,

Cons: I look how I feel or think, I change mentally when I shape-shift, I get the weakness of the species, asking people for DNA is weird.

"I'm not sure. I listed a good amount of pros and cons, I think. I only had powers for a few months, and recently they went through a big change. This is hard for me." Kon let out a sigh, then followed it up with a laugh. "But I'm having fun and it's helpful! How about you? Need any help? I think we should look over each other's work and see if there's anything we're missing. I might see your powers in a way you never thought about."

”Really? Wow, this whole island must be pretty crazy for you, then. I at least had my magic for a year or two before I had to use it.” Tilly said, idly scribbling into her journal. Kon was definitely one of the better partners she’d had. Heck, he actually seemed to be enjoying the assignment. When he asked her if she needed help, she glanced solemnly at her own chart once again.

”I, uh… I suppose I could use an outside perspective.” She mumbled, sheepishly pushing her diagram towards him. ”I just can’t think of what isn’t good about magic!” She groaned. ”It’s so versatile, and it’s not like it hurts me to use it. I’m tapping into my own power, from my own mind. There’s no price but diligent study. I feel like this assignment really wasn’t made for me.” Said Tilly, throwing up her hands in exasperation.

As if on cue, the light fixture nearest to them flickered out. Tilly glanced at her wrist. ”Thunderation.” She cursed in a low breath, realizing she’d forgotten her bracelet again. For the most part, her mana static didn’t occur too frequently, so she could forget quite often. It was only really when she practiced magic that it got really bad.

Kon let out a laugh. "Yeah. Even though I'm quickly learning to get used to things, I'm still stunned by everything around me and what I can now do." Saying that out loud made everything feel much more real. It was hard for him to tell if that was more or less comforting. In the end, he just felt dizzy.

Focusing on the group project brought him out of what could have been a very long mental debate he would have with himself. Looked like Matilda really did need an outside perspective. What she had down for cons was lacking, and she viewed her powers in a way that reminded him of how he used to view his. All good, none of the bad. Until that bad came out of nowhere and screwed things up.

Like how the lights were screwing up right now. How convenient. A smirk that questioned Tilly's statements rose to his face. "I think that counts as being a con. If that was you, that is. As for tips, I have a friend who had some good tips that helped me. His magic was split into Small and Big magic. Big magic that required tons of preparation and could do amazing things. At the same time, it could lead to immense consequences, whether it failed or not. Him classifying my ability as being Big Magic helped me look at it in a different way and use it with more care."
