Angelo knew a lot of people. There was no way around that. He remembered every person he'd ever met, and he considered a large number of them friends. Clarence and the other Wonders. Agatha and the other Sentinels. Gabe, and... well, mostly just Gabe. All the people he'd met since than on Manta Carlos.

But at the top of everything, resting in a special space in his heart, were the Defiant. His team. His people. And even if that group had been chipped away, he still tried to hold onto them.

But it felt like they were drifting. He was still friends with Travis. He'd inducted Broen in. But Janelle never seemed to have time for them, and Rory...

Well, the less he thought of Rory, the better.

Blade was the one outlier. The last one to arrive on the island. The one who had the most trouble fitting in.

Angelo felt like he hadn't really seen her around in a bit, and he was trying to make a point to fix that, stopping by her dorm and rapping on the door.

    "Blade?"

He knew her real name, but it felt wrong to say it out loud.

    Blade had felt tense lately
, very tense, even more than what she always seemed to feel. So when she heard the soft rapping on the door she jumped to her feet, body like a coil aching to be sprung.

    Then, she heard Jude's voice.

That tension turned to queasiness. Jude was here? She relaxed physically, though only a little, hand clenching at her stomach where her insides seemed to be flipping over, fluttering like a dying bird. It was a sickening feeling.

She went to the door and opened it, though only partially, giving enough of a crack in the doorway for Jude to see her.

She didn't want him to see inside her dorm room. She almost felt as if she was ashamed of what it looked like.

"Jude," she regarded him coolly, looking him over from head to toe. She was trying to discern whether or not something else had changed about him, like another missing limb or a new scar. Her eyes then rose to meet his. "What are you doing here?"

Angelo was, for the most part, the same person he'd always been. Or at least the same person he'd been since he'd come to the island. He'd changed a lot, both physically and mentally, and at times his life in Halcyon seemed a lifetime away. Like it had all happened a million years ago.

A little buzzer went off in his head when Blade only cracked the door open, even upon seeing that it was him. He'd expected paranoia (she'd always been paranoid), but not even letting him in once she'd seen who it was...?

"I wanted to come visit," Angelo said, not bothering to correct her on his name. "I feel like I haven't seen you in a while."

Blade balked at the idea of him visiting, once again feeling strangely embarrassed by the state of her perfectly clean dorm. She opened the door wider, enough that he could come inside if he wanted, and she didn't stand in his way.

"It does feel like that," she said. "School keeps you busy, apparently." For the average person it wasn't that busy, but for Blade who would spend her days scouring the streets and staring up at the stars on rooftops all night, it was a lot more on her plate than she was used to. Really, she'd rather be getting beat up than go to school.

She sucked at small talk. So she said nothing and stared at Jude, waiting for him to either leave or come inside her dorm room.

"Not just school," Angelo admitted, sliding right on in the doorway and finding the dorm... well, more or less as he imagined it. Clean. Largely empty. That was how Blade was. It wasn't as if she collected knicknacks.

"My dad opened a restaurant--not a front, for the record--and I started working there. I wait tables and help make sure things are going well. That's taking up a lot of my time, so I definitely don't have as much free time as I'm used to."

It wasn't like the school he'd done at the tower had been particularly involved.

    "School keeping you busy?"

He suspected the answer was no.

Blade gestured vaguely to the room as he walked in, her way of saying 'Welcome to my hell hole, do whatever you like during your visit'.

She shut the door behind Jude, struggling to imagine Basilio Genovese being anything but a crimelord. She was still living in the past.

"You could say that," she mumbled numbly. She wasn't even sure how it was possible to fail Remedial classes, but her teachers had made it clear she should be doing much better given the circumstances. "School fucking sucks. I don't know how you do it."

Blade hated how childish she sounded and she stared at the door, struggling to look at Jude right now.

Was she happy to see him? Yes, but... Seeing him just reminded her of how different everything was and yet how normal it seemed to be all at the same time.

Of everyone in the group, there was no question that Blade had things the hardest. She'd never lived a normal life, and she was taking the adjustment like a fish to a desert. The fact that she sounded like a sullen teenager didn't even occur to Angelo at all, mostly because he had a moderate idea of what her life had been like beforehand.

"I have practice," Angelo pointed out. "I went to private school for years, and this isn't that much different. If anything, it's more... accommodating. But I'm not going to keep doing the school thing forever. I've been talking with the counselors to see if I can, ah, speed things up? To graduate, so I can start working."

He doubted Blade had any idea what she wanted to do once she graduated. Even graduating seemed... unlikely.

"There has to be something good, right?"

    Blade could taste her bitterness.

She'd always felt like on some level her and Jude were similar, but in this moment they felt worlds apart. And perhaps they were, her mind lingering in Halcyon and Jude living boldly in this very different world. She crossed her arms, subconsciously feeling exposed and vulnerable.

"There's nothing good," she said evenly, turning and leaning against the door. "I'm a 'normie' with a 'light sword' or whatever they call it - - 'saber' maybe? - - you know what, I don't really care, so nevermind..."

She was talking with that deadpan voice of hers per usual but there was an edge to it, a kind of guarded frustration that simmered beneath her words.

    She hesitated.

    "I'm only here because..."

Because you guys are here. Because you're here.

"...I have nowhere else to go, really," she finished. Blade let out a soft sigh , kicking at the floor lazily with the toe of her shoe. "It'll get better, supposedly, is what they all keep saying. So I guess it doesn't matter."

She still wasn't really looking at Jude.

A normie. Back at home he'd been a 'normie'. He'd had no powers. He'd survived as a hero because of what he'd pilfered from his father's supplies, and the training he'd been given to allow him to defend himself. He knew what it was like to feel like that, but it wasn't like that for him anymore. Not since even before they'd left Halcyon.

Back there, he'd had Giltenn as part of his body. He could never have passed for completely human.

"You're... unanchored," Angelo said, trying to put words to something he was having a hard time articulating. Travis and Janelle had family. Broen... well, Broen had family, but it hardly counted. If anyone, Broen was probably the closest to Blade's situation, but he'd come across without... well, without a lot of things. He'd not been completely emotionally there, and that had been a significant advantage in his particular case to start.

"Maybe a... goal would help? Having something to aim towards. That helped me when I first got here."

Jude was trying to help her. That was Jude. He would help everyone if he could help it.

"A goal," she echoed numbly. "Something to aim towards."

How are you supposed to have goals if you have no future?

"I suppose that could help..." she gave in, though not even half-heartedly. Her life was purposeless now, and she'd only lived for a purpose before coming here. "I'm not sure what but I'll probably come up with something."

She wasn't sure if she felt angry at Jude or angry at herself or terrified of the unknown but she felt an ugly emotion bubbling up in her chest which she frantically (though silently) tried to smother. This whole situation wasn't his fault, it wasn't anyone's fault, and yet... She was upset.

She wasn't getting far with the conversation but she certainly wasn't trying either.
