    Mari hated this.

She'd never liked the bullshit of elections back at home and this didnt feel any different. Except this time it was worse, because this time she was participating.

Mari groaned quietly as she stood on her tiptoes to pin the corner of a poster on the wall.

    "Vote 4 Mari
    she Bae"

it said. Glittery and lovely in cursive. She'd put time into it. And hated every minute of it.

She had to do this. She was desperate. For months now she had been struggling as a Celestial Guardian, trying to get by on just killing people. She'd done enough to count on one hand, and that was all she could manage. The rest escaped.

But each kill was hard. Harder than she liked. She was not well versed for fighting, and she was not naturally a killer. Each time broke her down and made her vomit. But she had to become stronger. She was terrified of being at the bottom. She didn't want to be culled.

    She needed to become stronger.

Thus, the elections. It was a quick way to get people to notice you and, hopefully, like you. A quick way to power.

Angelo made a point of keeping track of who was participating in the elections. Any given term there were a handful of people, and most dropped out before long. Lots of people liked the theory, but didn't like the work.

There was only so much he could do unless he stumbled upon someone, say, putting up posters.

    Which he did.

He stopped mid-step, his head turning as he looked at the poster. Vote 4 Mari.

His brain told him the girl in front of him was Mari, but he opted to be polite anyway.

    "You're Mari?"

Mari was exhausted beyond all reason; she didn't notice Angelo walking behind her until he spoke. Months of being terrified of being culled from behind caught up to Mari in a rush of months At the sound of his voice she jumped, falling backwards off the stool step and back towards Angelo. A small shriek escaped her.

In that moment, Angelo really wish he'd kept that one regalia. The one that would have let him stop time, work things out, and then resume. As it was, he was forced to rely on his normal reaction time, reaching up to try and catch her.

He landed on his ass, but at least she didn't bang her head or something. He'd sort of caught her, but it was not a dignified fall at all.

Mari was quite relieved to not be getting murdered right now.

They landed on the floor and Mari yelped "Motherfucker!", turning to look at Angelo and chew him out - - but then she saw his face.

"Oh, hey cutie," she said, eyeing him like he was a snack. "Thanks for catching me..."

Well that wasn't the reaction he'd expected. He let her go, pulling back and going to push himself up.

"No," he said quickly. "Sorry for startling you. I just saw the poster, and..."

And yeah. He was definitely thrown off by the look she was giving him as he dusted himself off, but he forged ahead, holding a hand out to Mari.

"Uh, Angelo Genovese. Nice to meet you. I'm running for student council as well."

Aw, he was polite. Mari didn't hate polite boys, she actually found them cute, but they were definitely harder to get in bed with.

Wait. No, Mari. You're supposed to be getting popular so stop acting like a thot.

She froze in place as she remembered her subjugation. Recalling it alone was enough to make her feel like she'd been hit by a truck. This was a nightmare and she wanted to wake up.

She was frozen in place until he held out a hand to her, which she glanced at briefly before using it to pull herself up to her feet.

"Oh, really?" she said, looking at him in the eyes briefly before looking away, a complete contrast to how she had acted before. Instead of flirty she was more nervous in her stature, as if unsure of herself. "Well I guess we are competition then? Or future coworkers?"

She quirked a brow and looked at him again. "What are you aiming for?" she asked, trying to make friendly conversation.

"Potentially both," Angelo said. Competition almost never was a bad thing in Angelo's opinion, but truthfully he had a hard time considering anyone to be serious competition. While it was possible he'd end up really competing with someone, he didn't think he was going to.

Most of the posters he'd seen had been his own. He'd made it obvious he was going to be running, and no one else seemed to have been quite so prominent. Amber, maybe? But she was young, and her chance at the presidency seemed pretty low.

"President," Angelo said. "I'm the vice president right now, but I plan to step up for my last turn on council. The current president isn't running at all, so I think the only people running again are me and the auditor, Alma."

So there'd be a lot of newcomers.

Mari wasn't really surprised but she felt a bit stupid at not recognizing the schools very own current vice president. That just made her look out of touch. But he didn't seem to particularly care, and the truth was that she didn't either. Or at least she wouldn't, normally. She missed the days when it didn't matter what other people thought of her.

"Oh, cool," she said, nodding knowingly even though she knew nothing at all. "I'm not planning to be President so hey, maybe we will get to work together in the future."

She offered him a smile. He was cute. A boy scout type, but cute regardless.

"It's nice to meet you," she said, kind of wanting to exit the conversation but at the same time wanting to get on his good side. "Got any of them uh... Policies? Plans for shiii - - stuff to talk about during your run?"

She was a master of communication.

Angelo was definitely not the kind of person who'd be bothered by someone not knowing him. Really, he almost kind of liked people not knowing who he was. Back at home he'd have said Angelo Genovese and everyone would have gone all shifty. Or they wouldn't have, and then they'd have gone home, talked to their parents, and mysteriously stopped wanting to deal with him the next day.

"I'm running on a platform of disaster preparedness. Do you already have a platform in mind?"

He didn't directly comment on the maybe we'll work together. He kind of assumed it was an inevitable thing, honestly. Not all that many people actually bothered to run for student council or anything.
