Sprinkles sat on Dr. Bryndísarson's couch with his knees up to his chest and his boots on the floor. This would be Sprinkles' first therapy session, and he was very tempted to skip it. Unfortunately, there was no way to turn back after already being greeted, allowed inside, and told to sit and get comfortable. Not without causing trouble and feeling shameful afterward. So he had decided he would let Dr. Bryndísarson take the lead in everything. If Sprinkles kept being uncooperative but stayed calm, Dr. Bryndísarson would give up with him or realize there was nothing wrong, then cancel any future sessions.

Why go to therapy when you weren't mentally ill and none of this was real, anyway? If this wasn't some kind of extreme nightmare, it was surely some kind of hell. The only possibility of this being a nightmare was the optimistic side of there being some chance to get out through a miracle.

Valli was not particularly fond of mandatory therapy. It was necessary, in many cases, but it wasn't easy. You had to want to get better to get better in so many cases.

Whether Sprinkle wanted to get better remained to be seen.

Valli smiled pleasantly at Sprinkles as he settled into one of the armchairs across from them.

"It's nice to meet you," Valli said. "I'll cover the basics in order - everything you say in here is absolutely confidential. I can only break that confidentiality in the event that someone is in danger. Your sessions are mandatory, so that does mean I'll be reporting back, but the only thing I can report on is whether or not you're showing up." He wasn't allowed to say how good or bad they were doing.

"If I see you in public, I won't acknowledge you, because I understand some people dislike the idea of others knowing they are in therapy. The third thing to tell you is that I have an aura which makes me appear more presentable than I am. It doesn't change your perception any more than brushing my hair a bit extra would."

Those were all the basics, and Valli spun his pen in his fingers before settling back.

"Any questions about any of those before we begin?"

Sprinkles was certain that the worst part of Valli's introduction would be him having to report if Sprinkles were showing up to sessions. But no, he just had to have an aura. Mind control magic radiating out of your body or however you described it. And sure, it wasn't as troubling as other others, but it was still unnerving.

Despite the discomfort on his face, Sprinkles listened quietly and politely, only speaking when allowed to. "I can't think of any. Um, I don't mind if you acknowledge me first. It doesn't seem like a big deal... Actually, I do have one, no, two questions. How many sessions can I skip before I get in trouble, and how many sessions until this is over?"

Well, that pretty firmly answered if Sprinkles was going to be receptive. The answer, as they said, was a big fat no.

Valli made a point of double checking, getting up and sliding over to his desk to double check before returning to his seat.

"For the time being, none. We only have weekly sessions, and if you're unable to make it, you do need to give a substantial reason. Just skipping it because you don't want to isn't an option, I'm afraid. There's also no exact limit for how many times you'll have sessions. Once you've been cleared as being mentally well, the sessions will no longer be mandatory, although I'll still encourage you to attend."

"C-ooooool," Sprinkles said awkwardly, playing emphasis on the "C." Then he continued to repeat that word quietly to himself, thinking about what next to say. This sounded awful. All of it. All of it sounded awful.

"I can work with that." He gave a small nod and big smirk. Nothing to indicate he was trying to challenge his therapist, but more that he was confident in some plan of his. A plan he barely had figured out. "I'll cooperate then. Doesn't sound too hard to just sit in a room and talk with one person for an hour. Boring, but not excruciating. Alright, so, what do you want to do? I didn't actually come here with anything to talk about. I'll need some kind of lead to being 'mentally well.'"

They seemed more normal than what Valli had expected. Most of the other NEK0s were... dysfunctional at best.

"We can start with the basics," Valli said. "Have you started class? How are you finding the school?"

"School sucks. I've started remedial, but I'm a fast learner, so I'll be getting out soon for sure. Possibly eleventh or twelfth grade. Too many people are at the school though, and way too many people to listen to. Plus, Dad and I learned things together, and I had the internet. I don't really need school."

Sprinkles didn't intend to talk so much, but there was a possibility that he could get through to Valli on letting him drop out of some stuff. If Valli realized that Sprinkles was better off being homeschooled by himself or one other person, then life here might not be so awful.

"A big part of school," Valli said with a small, natural smile, "is learning to learn properly. To develop proper study habits so you can tackle more difficult concepts. Things that work for simple stuff won't always work for more difficult stuff, but the school does an excellent job of accommodating. One of my patients has been allowed to test out of more than half their classes and replace them with classes they can't skip past. I'm sure the school will find ways to accommodate your advanced rate of learning."

"Well, I plan on going back home to my dad after I have enough money and I'm old enough. I don't really need to learn proper study habits? I lived just fine until now. Sounds more like the school, and the island in general, is trying to cause more problems for me than necessary. There are other ways for people to live than this that are much better for them."

Valli could have just ended it there. No, she'd never go back. He wasn't privy to what exactly had happened to her 'father', but he knew there would be no happy reunion.

"There are," Valli agreed, "but there are still certain skills which are important to know. It's easy--comfortable even--to rely on others to do things for you. But knowing the math to do things like file your taxes are something that everyone needs to know."
