"Review, huh? Oh, I should probably give you copies... There's plenty of spares lying around, and part of your "test" will be identifying which ones you've already actually done once I explain how to spot them."

Adelaida thumbed through her books. They were bound as simply as could be, and contained clean illustrations of the patterns that formed spells, with brief descriptions of what they did. She'd spent more time than she cared to admit carefully designing them in illustration software, utilizing digital precision to replicate the patters without flaw.

She wondered what method would be best for Michi when it came to actually creating the spells herself. Should she be taught the old ways that required painstaking, precise and perfectionist method of drawing them by hand, or should Adelaida teach her how to modernize just as she had done? Or maybe Michi would be interested in learning both. God, Adelaida felt giddy at the possibility that her student both had the proven talent and the drive for the arts.

But for now, she had to proceed.

"Spells in my art have a simple structure. You have these 'fragments'," she said, showing the breeze rune without its containing circle. Her finger traced through the pattern. "A spell is made by forming fragments into a pattern, then closing them in a circle to form a 'circuit.' That's the most basic structure there is. That's why the spell doesn't take effect until you've fully closed the circle. This also means you should never start with the outer circle first, because it's possible to accidentally fire it off before it's complete. Like for more complex spell fragments, where you can alter parameters by changing the angle or length of a line."

She paused, and then suddenly fell to a sudden realization that filled her with shame. "I, uh, forgot to mention that, didn't I? Oh god. Good thing I prepared idiot-proof beginner fragments. Oh god. You're still okay."

Michi was glad to know she didn't have to draw all her review runes from scratch, clapping silently with the news. The idea of making them from scratch was tempting, but maybe not this soon. In any case, identifying them should be easy and she was confident in that. As Adelaida proceeded with her lecture, taking mental notes of the lesson. She immatiately noticed her own mistake when Adelaide pointed out that the spell was not supposed to take effect until the circle was closed, but said nothing of it. She only assumed it was the reason her earlier attempts flunked so much. And then Adelaida stopped speaking, and she looked at her with concern for a moment. Michi laughed awkwardly in response. "Well, good thing we didn't start with the fire rune after all..?" she said, sounding almost unsure of her own words. Apparently, she was right to put it last when she had some semblance of control down, otherwise she was doomed to burn down the classroom after all.

"Oh my god that was a big mistake. We've gotten lucky. Misfires get exponentially worse based on spell complexity, so we weren't at that much risk, but... anyway. Always do the outermost circle last, okay."

She perused through the book, stopping at a page that indicated a smaller fragment, lacking in complexity compared to the others. It was a fragment of a fragment, something that only existed in context. "You've worked on effect runes so far, which produce, well, effects. This is one of the other kinds. It's called a modifier, which you overlap with an effect to change it. For instance..."

Adelaida remade the water rune, including a small new addition and pulled out a paper cup. "Every modifier is a layer of complexity, and changes effects. If you were to evoke this particular spell, it would create cold water as opposed to the room temperature water you previously made. That's because this fragment essentially changes the spell from 'create water' to 'create cold water. It has a few weird interactions with the basic fire rune, making it cold as well, so it becomes safe to touch."

She handed over the first book of runes. "This is a collection of the simpler fragments that you should remember. We've got several of these in order of increasing difficulty, but I don't expect you to finish this one completely for a while. Look through it, and if anything catches your fancy I can write it for you to try out."

Michi's smile twitched, as if it wasn't awry as it was already. Both of them ended up making a mistake, but on each their parts, one was an absolute beginner, the other, a master of the art itself -- it was natural she'd probably overlook telling her something so simple, yet so foreign. But well, that part is done and over with, and the mistake can be rectified in future attempts, so all Michi could do was nod along. "Outer circle last, got it," she said, making a mental note over and over it almost sounded like the voices in her head started echoing the thought for her. While that was happening in the mess that is her headspace, she turned her attention to the book, while Adelaida continued to explain to her a new detail. She watched intently as her mentor made the water rune, watching how she drew the rune along with the modifier. When Michi was then handed the book of runes, her first instinct was to inspect it's outer appearance: checking the weight, its spine, the thickness. All before flipping through the pages, some of which contained illustrations -- which she would guess were the fragments. The idea of doing more than the basics she'd done earlier was enticing, and the voices in her mind seemed to echo the thought. Imagine being able to control fire the same way as Adelaida, a voice murmured. Michi shook her head; she had to remind herself not to get ahead of herself. Her impatience could likely cause her a bigger mishap she can't fix. "Might take a while," she said sheepishly, setting down the book in favor of the new water rune Adelaida had made a moment ago. "Are we starting with this then?"

Perhaps she was a bit unclear.

The water rune was simply for the sake of examples. Adelaida instead wanted to see where Michi's interests would pull her, which was why she gave the entire book instead of holding Michi's hand and making a selection herself.

Most of the fragments in this book were the harmless, low risk and low reward fragments. It was, in many ways, a beginner's guide to magic. And it would be important to figure out where Michi's curiosities would take her.

The magic in the book varied a lot. There were simple spells such as creating a small, flickering light akin to a candle, and conjuring the elements as she'd done prior, and spells to impose movement on objects. Some of Adelaida's personal favorites were in here as well, like the rune you traced on yourself to be rid of the need for sleep for a day. She liked messing around with self-alteration, but had made an executive decision while planning the lessons to not include the permanent ones... at least not in the beginner's book.

"Hmmm. We can work with the cold water, but honestly, I'd rather you look through the book first, see if anything in the descriptions catches your attention, and we can work with that."

Michi blinked a few times, looking down on the rune Adelaida sampled her before looking towards the book again. She took a deep breath reaching for it again and opening its pages -- properly this time. She had already flipped through the pages earlier, and a few that caught her eye though she decided those should be for later. But now that Adelaida was giving her the option to try anything in the book that she wanted, she might have gotten a little giddy. Or maybe it was the voices? Either way, it didn't really seem like it mattered to Michi. Michi turned through the pages, turning them to the few fragments that had caught her eye just from a glance, before turning to the others in no particular order. Adelaida would have caught Michi turning back to certain pages as if deliberating on them. Trying to narrow her decisions to a single one, she turned the book to face Adelaida. "What about something like this?" The page showed a spell to change her appearance visually. Michi would have loved to make things out of nowhere but... altering herself a bit seems like a curious thing too. Plus, it didn't seem permanent, so Michi thought it wouldn't hurt to try.

"Ooh. A classic, that one. It's also notoriously hard on the concentration because the spell keys off of what you're imagining as your end appearance, so you both have to focus on the spell and maintain a clear image of what you want to look like."

Adelaida quickly recreated the rune on a blank paper and handed it to Michi. It wasn't particularly complex in terms of invocation. The shapes were only on the same level of complexity as the beginner fragments, with the main challenge being the ability to mentally multitask.

"Alright, try your best. If you don't like what it looks like, you can keep trying, and it's not like it'll stick for too long anyway."

"A clear image huh?" Michi echoed. Easy. Or so she could say it was easy. Visualizing came easy for her, especially as a child. Though she wouldn't say it got harder as she got older, it was more of... the distracting company she was worried about. But, she reminded herself. She'd managed this far into her lessons. She couldn't get discouraged by her worries at a time like this. Plus, the voices were still hushed, possibly from the fumes, but she would hope not completely so. That aside, Michi watched her mentor recreate the rune, watching how she drew them and hoping she could pick up something when it was her turn to actually trace off them. This was going to be fine, Michi told herself as she was handed the new rune. It didn't look to complicated, but she had to remind herself this was 'notoriously hard' on concentration. "What's the limit on what I wanna look as?" she asked curiusly.

Adelaida thought on the spell. It wasn't really limited in particular, as long as your mind was sharp. "Limit is what you can clearly imagine. I've seen people try to go too fancy and end up with blank spots in places where they forgot the details. Thank god it's not a physical transformation or those poor sods would be very... undesirable."

Then again, Michi didn't particularly need to transform. Adelaida eyed her pupil, trying to at first hold off on the habitual remark, but then she realized that she wasn't one to deny her nature. "Not sure you can transform into anything cuter at this point, really..."

She went back to doodling runes, trying to recreate the complex spells of her youth. The patterns were sharp, the angles precise, and the detail absurd. Maybe she could gift Michi some custom-made spells once she'd mastered the art.

Limit is what you can clearly imagine. Michi looked at her mentor for a moment before looking down on the rune. 'So, almost anything?' she wondered to herself. She shook her head, not a good time to get ahead of herself -- she didn't even know how it'll turn out if her focus went to the voices. While she was pondering on what appearance to take, she heard her mentors comment and right as she did, Michi looked up looking puzzled. "Hah?" she said rather dully. Though by then, her mentor was too busy scribbling away, and Michi decided it was not something she should be asking right now. She turned back to the rune. 'Anything cuter'? If she were to be honest, she didn't think of herself that way. For a moment, an imagine of her sister appeared in her mind's eye, and she considered it. Aside from appearing more mature than her, they looked quite similar, being sisters and all. It was fairly simpler than starting out with something from scratch. Plus, she was very familiar with her sister's appearance. It's not like there's any harm trying out what it feels like looking like Sahara. She breathed out. Visualizing her sister from memory while filling in a few gaps she couldn't recall properly. Once she had that ready, she started with the rune, this time tracing from the inside of the circle. She was careful, making sure the visual of her sister didn't leave her thoughts while she focused her magic into the rune. In the middle of her first attempt she got interrupted, startled by a memory of her sister yelling at her, amplified by the voices which would have been evident when she flinched. Thankfully, it was before she could even begin with the outer circle. The second attempt had a minor change, since she tried not to remember too much to not trigger another memory. But not quite a change enough to consider it a success. Aside from her hair being longer, she looked pretty much the same. The third was a little better. Visually, she'd manage to capture her sister's sultry look, along with the more obvious physical attributes and a lil change of wardrobe. With a look in the mirror she pulled out from her bag, Michi nearly wrinkled her nose from seeing her 'sister' in her reflection. Deciding she shouldn't be thinking too hard about it, she turned to her mentor. "Uh. Does it look like I missed anything?"
