Doctor Jason Chang was well used to being out in the wilderness, tracking the creatures he devoted his life to. He was leading a surprisingly small party of volunteers into the forest near the complex he was using to house his precious cargo until a way home could be found for them all.

He was knelt next to a tree trunk, inspecting the damage to the bark, but as he did the tree seemingly vanished into thin air. He stood with a sigh and turned to his group to explain.
"The trees in this section of the forest on this islet have the worrisome property of vanishing from existence for indefinite periods of time.

If I were here under better circumstances, I would want to study them. But there are more pressing matters."

He walked a bit farther ahead, motioning for the others to follow him. "What we are tracking is called, in layman's terms, a Roof Walker. Human in shape, but not in mind. Looks a bit like a walking shadow. They cannot touch the ground, so they leap along roofs, trees, etc. Tracking it may be difficult, but if we can lure it to an open area, we can effectively trap it."

Stopping in his tracks, Jason stooped down and inspected the ground. Or rather the large brown-gray feather on the ground. The vulture was near too. Standing up, he stepped forward, crushing the feather inconspicuously into the dirt.
"This way. There are signs of it breaking limbs as it moved through the canopy."

Evan didn't really need to work again. This world's Evan--Evaristus--was rich as could be, just the way he'd been as a kid. If he wanted to, he could have retired right then and there.

But that would leave him a lot of spare time, and Evan really didn't want that kind of spare time. He wanted things to do. He wanted distractions. So when a job came up that Evan felt was vaguely in his skillset--tracking, not so much fighting--he'd signed up.

In terms of combat, Evan was going to be near the bottom. He could handle hand to hand. He could arrest humans. He had guns--a hunting rifle slung across his back and a handgun in his holster--but against monsters? Against eight foot tall demons? His power wasn't going to do anything against those things, and he was really hoping that whoever else had signed up could fill in those gaps for him.

There was only one Evan when he showed up at the meeting point, exchanging pleasantries with his new teammate. They'd already done the earliest of introductions--he'd been just Evan, no last name--but as Chang led them into the woods, following the trail, Evan decided to add a bit more.

"For the record, at some points I can make there be two of me," Evan said. "Should help a bit with flanking it. I've got no experience fighting something like this, but I've got experience tracking things through the woods, so that's not completely strange to me." Normally they were at ground level, but people had tried to throw off the trail by going through the trees, and this was no different.

Hazel floated behind them, making sure too stay a bit hidden. This was a little bit dumb of her. Maybe it was her trying to prove that even though she was fairly crippled, she can still do something to help out. It wasn't too dangerous, and can help out fairly well if needed.

Landing, Hazel inches closer, looking to Evan's left side. It felt comforting, working with another human. Though it was a weird feeling, but given of what she heard, he had a rough first few days. Having Hazel here might make him feel a bit safer.

"My ice magic can also help, maybe make pillars to create our own path for it to follow. Plus I am not that bad at searching." She poofed an ice owl in front of her, smirking. Oh, being able to look through the eyes of this little thing was helpful. She sent it out, having it fly around the trees, trying to find the moving shadow. "So it hops through trees, what else can this thing do?"

Jason nodded and gave his two companions a pleasant smile. "Those both sound like they will be quite useful in the task ahead of us."

Using a walking stick to push underbrush out of the way, Jason moved forward. He pointed out broken limbs and similar signs of the creature's passing as he answered questions that the two of them raised.
"Roof walkers aren't particularly malicious creatures, but they ate dangerous. Given that they cannot touch the ground, they have developed powerful hind leg strength to allow them to make incredible leaps and land safely."

He pointed out a fallen tree, snapped in half from the point where something recently crashed into it. "Do try to make sure that you aren't the only object above ground level when we get near it."
Almost as if on cue, a branch fell nearby, and a tree some twenty feet away shuddered slightly with an impact. Up above, a shadow could barely be seen with pinpricks of yellow for eyes. It stared down at.the trio, crouched on a branch it had no right to be able to sit on given its size.

Evan couldn't see it. Not clearly. It was shaped kind of like a human, but it's proportions weren't quite right. Too stretched out.

But also very obviously aware of them, staring down at them on the ground.

"It has to be light to be able to sit up there," Evan pointed out, not terribly concerned about talking lightly, considering it was right there. Considering the tree and the damage that had been done, it had to have some extreme velocity, and Evan really didn't want to get hit by it.

"What happens if it touches the ground?" And, after a moments thought, Evan had a better question. "How durable is it? I have a gun, but if I can't shoot it, that'll have its own issues. I assume 'don't shoot it' is a priority except in cases of emergencies.

He should have brought tranquilizer darts, but he hadn't realized it was going to be like this. The creature wasn't used to the environment, and as a result it had been fairly easy to track.

Hazel stared at the creature, backing up a bit. Taking a deep breath, she steadied her nerves, trying not too freak out. This was not some psycho, this was just a creature. Thankfully now, she didn't have to worry about finding the thing. Although, they needed to lure this thing....

One more ice owl appeared, keeping an eye on the creature. The other one flew off, looking for a open area to the north west. "Okay, so we lure this thing, then what? Cage it? Knock it out, maybe both?" She was good at knocking stuff out. However, she was a bit on the frail side herself. Just gotta hope it doesn't focus her.

"Excellent questions," Jason offered quietly, setting down his walking stick. "No one suite sure because no one has seen one touch the ground. Attempting to study the phenomena resulted in... violent behavior."

A few more trees in the area blinked out of existence and a couple more popped back in. Jason produced a pistol from inside his jacket, a large thing filled with tranqilizer darts. "I would prefer we try to not injure it. But I won't put it's safety above our own. If it comes down to it, put it down please."

Jason moved around the tree, keeping his eyes on the creature. "I believe there is a clearing to the West. Er... behind you two."
From above, the roof walker swayed on its branch, watching the group before leaping to a lower branch. The branch it left snapped as it left, plummeting to the ground towards the group.

Well, that gave her a good idea of what to do. They had to figure out how to get that thing over there. Would it follow them or was it smart enough to know when a clearing was coming nearby. However, she didn't get the time to ask how they would get this thing to follow.

She was definitely startled, but not scared by the branch falling. She dealt with worse during the corn maze, this was easy compared to that. The ice owls disappeared, and Hazel waved her hands. Above her appeared a dome of ice, but it didn't completely reach the ground. It was large enough to catch the branch, letting it slide away from them. Afterword she immediately poofed the dome away. "Strong legs..."

The branch falling more or less cemented that, even if they both had their own skills, none of the three were in sync. Hazel created an ice shield, but Evan was already backing away, grabbing Jason by the back of the shirt and hauling him backwards. Thankfully it was a different direction from where the ice dome had dumped the branch, but it did give Evan something specific to focus on.

"So what's the plan?" Evan said. "Flank it towards the clearing, and then have it freeze on the edge of the clearing so you can tranquilize it?" He didn't want to just rush into things. Things went bad when you rushed into things without plans, and he did not want things to go bad. He was in no hurry to die, even though technically it was possible. Even if he died here, there was still a him back at the mansion, safe as could be.

Hazel and Jason likely didn't have that option.

"Yes that seems the best course of action. We will try and lure it to the clearing. Perhaps create some pillars of ice for it to land on? Guide it there?"
Jason never took his eyes off of the creature as he spoke, aiming his gun up at it. Too far away for a clean shot.

It started at the group for a moment before looking up at the sky. In a flash it was gone, and a tree nearby shuddered with sudden impact. Jason was quick to follow, shouting low for the others to flank to the left and right.
