    Character Rules

    Application Procedure
    • Applications for new characters should be posted in the character applications forum. Once accepted, they will be sorted into their respective category (student, staff, citizens, or supporting characters. Work in progress applications should not be posted in this forum, but instead in the free for all forum.
    • The thread title should be your characters first and last names. If your character is Angela Rogers, the title of their application should be 'Angela Rogers'. Feel free to omit any middle names that aren't commonly used, but also feel free to include any nicknames that are used, for example: Angela "Annie" Rogers. If your character exclusively goes by a pseudonym, that should be the application title.
    • Starlight Academy has three different base application templates, one for each primary character category. We allow players to add as many additional fields as they would like, or restyle the application with templates or designs. However, any modified applications must still contain the base fields, and must be readable (no black or white text without background). We do not allow free form applications.
    • If you aren't sure which template applies to your character, please see this page.
    • Please try and keep your applications brief. Depending on abilities and how much history a character has to get through, most applications on Starlight Academy range from 500 to 3000 words. If you're going past that, consider if you might be able to cut things down and leave out stuff that isn't significant.
    • Once you have posted your application, you do not need to notify a moderator. Mods are automatically alerted when someone posts a new application in the forum. Once a mod has taken your application, a prefix with their name will be applied to the thread.
    • Feel free to tag your application with your characters tag, either first last or first (player), and with any content warnings you might need to include. Please do not tag the characters species, abilities, etc. Moderators handle species tagging.
    • Depending on your application, your character might be temporarily pended for clarifications or changes. This is normal, and nothing to worry about! The majority of players are pended at least their first time, if not multiple times. Even mods get pended frequently to clarify things they might not have thought to explain. If you are pended, simply read over the message from the moderator, make the changes, and reply to their PM letting them know you've made edits.
    Character Guidelines
    • Players are strongly encouraged to read our things to consider when making a character FAQ. This covers a number of common problems which result in the application process taking longer than usual.
    • Applications should be filled out in full, to the best of your ability. We do not have word counts or minimums, but if the moderator reading can't get an idea of what your character is like, they may ask for more details. For appearances, an image is not a replacement for a description.
    • Starlight Academy is an original roleplay. All characters must be your own original creation. Canon persons, creatures, or concepts from other works fiction can not be a part of your character's canon. If you have any questions, feel free to ask staff. Plagiarism is not tolerated.
    • Characters are allowed to be connected to mythology, urban myth, and public domain works. However, your character cannot be the canon. For example, your character could be a child of Zeus, but you couldn't play Zeus himself. Similarly, your character could be a demon who feels they inspired the original story of Faust, but you couldn't claim they were the original source of the Faust story.
    • Starlight Academy does not have a face-claim system. We do not track which characters use which faces. We allow the use of art, fanart, concept art, or real life people, with the following conditions:
      • Original Art: Do not use other people's original character art without permission.
      • Real Life: Playbys should be one of the following: Model (with a modeling agency page), Stock Photo (released for free public use), or Media Star (with either a Wikipedia page, or having starred in a TV show/movie).
    • Character profiles should not contain any NSFW materials, including images or external links. Images that are SFW but risque should be placed under a spoiler tag. If parts of your application include content that some people might find upsetting or offensive (such as non-con, child abuse, etc), we ask that you either place it under a spoiler tag with a warning, or tag the thread at the top with warnings for the content.
    • Is your character intended specifically to support other characters, and not have a real plot of their own? They might be considered a Supporting Character, or a Named NPC. See this post for more information on if this applies to your character.
    • On character creation, characters are granted up to three active abilities and five passive abilities. Regardless of how your character gets their abilities (naturally, from their species, from magical items or otherwise), all abilities should be noted down. That includes anything your character can do that a human wouldn't be able to. If your character has abilities beyond this limit, they must have weaknesses that are equivalent to their excess abilities.
    • Common Magical Items can only be pulled from this list. You must copy directly from that list--any change means the item is no longer a common magical item, and should be treated the same as any other magical item that grants an ability.
    • For more details and examples, check the detailed ability guide.
    After Acceptance
    • Once your character is approved, claims will be handled for your automatically.
    • If your character has their own special store of business, please also feel free to make a thread just for them in the Businesses forum after they have been accepted.
    • If you realize shortly after acceptance that you've forgotten an ability, please see this page.
    • Your character may change over their time on site. Characters can age up normally, their personalities may shift, and their histories can be expanded without consulting the staff. Changes to their abilities must be handled through the ability upgrade process, found here. Other changes (such as retconning a characters age, making major edits to their backstory, giving them a new standard magical item) should be handled through the Major Application Changes thread, found here.

    Template
    Required

If you aren't sure which template to use, or what grade your student should be listed as, check out this guide!

If your application is showing up as a block of text, make sure to click 'paste as text' in the options!

    Student
    Code:
    [B]Name:[/B] Your characters name.
[B]Age:[/B] Your characters age. In cases where chronological age might not match, feel free to mention a mental or physical age as well.
[B]Birthday:[/B] Does not need to include year.
[B]Gender:[/B] Feel free to include pronouns as well.
[B]Species:[/B] Please refer to the list of species in the Character Rules thread!
[B]Category:[/B] Student / Staff / Citizen / Supporting Character. If your character has a job but is also a student, student takes priority.
[B]Class:[/B] Elementary, Middle School, High School, or College
[B]Grade:[/B] Standard American grade system (This is not the letter grade your student is receiving in school. This is their grade level. If you are unsure which grade your student is supposed to be in, please check the Student Class Listing in the Claims forum.)
[B]College Major[/B]: (if applicable, erase field if not.)

[B]Appearance Description:[/B] Eye color, skin color, clothing style, hair, height, weight, etc. No specific length; however much you need. Pictures are allowed, but please put a short description as well. Can use bullet points.

[B]Personality Description:[/B] This can be either in paragraph format (even just a single paragraph is fine) or in bullet points listing major personality traits. You should have both positive and negative traits.

[B]Active Abilities:[/B] List out the active abilities your character has access to. Active abilities are abilities your character can turn on and off, even if they don't have perfect control. Characters can have up to three active abilities for free. Any past that number must be balanced out by an equivalent weakness. This includes all types of abilities: A characters natural powers, their species abilities, and any magical items they might have. Active abilities are, in general, more powerful than passive abilities.

[B]Passive Abilities:[/B] List out the passive abilities your character has. Passive abilities are abilities that are always active, whether your character wants them to be or not. Characters can have up to five passive abilities for free. Any past that number must be balanced out by an equivalent weakness. This includes all types of abilities: A characters natural powers, their species abilities, and any magical items they might have. Passive abilities are, in general, weaker than active abilities.

[B]Weaknesses:[/B] Weaknesses are a part of your characters ability set which hinders them in some way. They are not limitations on their existing abilities (such as ranges, drawbacks, downsides), but instead completely separate drawbacks. A vampire being weak to sunlight, a fire mage who can't tolerate cool temperatures, and a werewolf's weakness to silver would all be considered weaknesses. Characters are not required to have weaknesses, but are strongly encouraged to do so. Only characters who have more than three active abilities or five passive abilities are required to have weaknesses. In that case, the weakness should hinder the character at least as much as they are benefiting from the extra ability.

[B]Common Magical Items:[/B] Items MUST be from the common magical item sticky. Do not put any other items here.

[B]Biography:[/B] This can be either in paragraph format (even just one or two paragraphs are fine) or in bullet points listing major parts of their history. Remember to mention how they got to the island.

[B]Resources:[/B] What resources does your character have access to? This would include things like money, housing, antiques, etc. You don't have to be very specific with this - just give us a general idea of what they have access to, with a note about why they have it.

[U]Additional Information:[/U] Is there anything else to take note of?

    Mini-Profile Template
    Optional, Post-Acceptance

Before joining in on the canon in-character chat box at the bottom of the site, players must fill out a canon ICC mini-profile, featured below. This will summarize your character, allowing for easier spur of the moment interaction within the ICC. Mini-profiles should be posted within your characters application, underneath the acceptance post. When RPing in the ICC, players should fill the e-mail/url field with a direct link to your characters mini-profile. This direct link can be found by navigating to your characters mini-profile, clicking the #3 in the top right of the post, and copying the URL that pops up.

Players can choose between two different mini-profile styles. Each has the same content, but the first allows for a 100x100 avatar image, while the other has no images.

This should only be posted after your character has been accepted!

    Name: Character's full name
Apparent Age: How old do they appear?
Gender: Feel free to include pronouns as well.
Species: Please refer to the list of species in the Character Rules thread!
    Height: How tall are they?
    Build: Skinny? Muscular? Average? etc.

Notable Features: Obvious physical traits not covered by above. Horns? Scars? Tail? Do they wear unusual clothing? Do they have tattoos or markings?

Physical Quirks: Does your character have an accent? Do they do anything unusual as far as body language? Things like hand gestures, constant fidgeting, etc.

Abilities Summary: Give a brief overview of their abilities. There's no need to get into specific details, just provide enough to give an idea.

Reputation: What would the average character know about your character? Is their job common knowledge? Would people have seen them around the school? Do they have a reputation?

Misc Information: Any other details that weren't covered by the above. The complete application should be around 150-250 words total. Please do not exceed 350 words. Shorter is better, and the longer your mini-profile, the harder time people will have getting an idea of your character.

    Species List

When filling out your profile, please be sure to include the characters species in the appropriate. This is an extensive list of known species, and it would be appreciated if members will refer to this when mentioning their characters species! Members can create their own species or add a new unmentioned species at any time.

Please do not tag your threads with the species; that is the moderators job.

    • "Species: Siren" Refers to bird-aligned and non-aquatic sirens. Mer-Sirens go under the merpeople tag.
    • "Species: Spirit" Not to be confused with ghosts; spiritual beings which were not originally living, physical beings.
    • "Species: Synthetic" For purely synthetic forms of life such as AI. Does not include robots, but other forms of artificial life.
    • "Species: Undead" Refers to any kind of undead which has physical form and is not a vampire.
    • "Species: Vampire"
    • "Species: Were-Shifter" Werewolf, weregiraffe, whatever! Anything that switches between a humanoid and animal form. Should be tagged with both species tags for their component parts.
    • "Species: Yokai" This is, essentially, the Japanese version of a Fae. As a result, it should be tagged similarly. For example, a Kitsune would be tagged "Species: Yokai", "Species: Kitsune". Here is a comprehensive list of Yokai. Includes "Inchlings", "Nekomata", etc.

    Real Life
    • "Species: Aquatic" Fish, sharks, crabs, etc. Also includes amphibians.
    • "Species: Arthropod" Insects, spiders, etc.
    • "Species: Avian" Birds!
    • "Species: Canine" Includes dogs, wolves, coyotes, jackals, foxes, hyenas, and other doglike mammals
    • "Species: Dinosaur" Non-avian dinosaurs only; birds get their own tag.
    • "Species: Feline" Includes all felines, from house cats to lions
    • "Species: Human" DOES NOT include fantasy sub-species; those get their own tags. DOES include metahumans, mages / magical humans, etc.
    • "Species: Inanimate" Anything that would be classed as a mundane object by normal humans. A magic talking sword, for example.
    • "Species: Mammal" Anything that is not listed here and is considered a mammal. For example, you would list a wolf as "Species: Canine", but not include "Species: Mammal." Mammal is a singular tag when no other tags apply. May be used in conjunction with their specific species. Example: "Species: Mammal, Species: Sloth".
    • "Species: Plant" Includes trees, vines, and general plant life
    • "Species: Reptile" snakes, lizards, etc.
    • "Species: Rodent" Includes mice, rats, squirrels, chinchillas, prairie dogs, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, chipmunks, chinchillas, hamsters, capybaras, and other similar small mammals. Like chinchillas.
    Other Tags
    • "Species: Hybrid" is used with both tags that the character is a hybrid of. A fusion of two or more species.
    • "Species: Unknown" is used when a characters species is completely unknown to them.
