Sunlight streamed through Reia's window as she slowly opened her eyes. It wasn't often that she decided to actually sleep - generally she would just remain awake all night, reading or playing with toys or whatever she wanted to do. However, this particular time she had chosen to lay down and get some sleep for the mere fun of it. Dreams were funny, she thought, as she stretched in a very catlike manner before hopping out of bed.

After putting some new clothes on, she walked to the door and opened it, before heading down the hall. She vaguely thought about talking to "dad person," as she called him, about having chosen to sleep and what kind of dreams she'd had. However, as she turned the corner to go looking for him, she discovered something - not to mention someone - she had not expected to see.

    "...Aluin?"

It wasn't often that Aluin wanted to sleep. Dreams were scary, in them there were always scary things like the darkness or black thorny tentacles or pain. Some dreams were less scary, those were the ones where Alt dad or Anita came and saved him from the bad things. The very scary dreams where the ones where bad things happened to Alt dad and Anita. From those Aluin woke up crying and Alt dad or Anita had to hug him until Aluin could sleep again. But Aluin didn't see very scary dreams that often, thankfully.

But tonight Aluin had seen one, and after he had woken up from it he had sobbed quietly in his bed, missing Alt dad. But lately he had been hesitant to go to Alt dad for help, and so he had just sat in his bed, tears quietly streaming down his face. And as the morning began slowly dawning Aluin had gotten thirsty, it was scary. Aluin always got thirsty after crying. So he had carefully climbed out of bed, not making a sound, and shuffled into the kitchen, glancing around him fearfully. The house was scarier before sunrise, the shadows were dark and looked threatening and loomed over Aluin like monsters. So Aluin walked quickly, trying not to sob.

In the kitchen Aluin took a cup, that was on a special shelf just for him. Alt dad had put it there so Aluin didn't have to reach or climb, it was scary. The cup was plastic, so if Aluin dropped it the sound wouldn't be as scary and the cup wouldn't break. Alt dad was almost not scary, Aluin liked him.
Aluin went over to the sink, and now the had to use a small stool so he could reach the tap. Aluin filled the cup with lukewarm water, it was the least scary temperature, and began coming down from the stool. But Aluin didn't look, looking down when on a stool was scary, and thus he accidentally stepped down too fast and stumbled. Aluin fell down, and his water splashed all over him and made his pajama all wet. Aluin sat up, and began to stare at the puddle that was now on the floor, and then he looked at the water all over him. And he began to sob quietly, the water on him felt cold and scary, and the cup had a crack because Aluin had fell on it. And that was when Reia came in, Aluin's sibling that he had to get along with. Aluin looked up at her, sitting on the ground by a puddle and a broken cup, all wet and crying quietly. And instead of a greeting all Aluin could say with a trembling voice was
    "I-I'm..scared..."

Aluin had always been a bit of a mystery to Reia. She barely seemed to see him despite their living under the same dwelling, and when she did see him he always looked... scared of something. Many times she had considered asking dad person to explain a little more about Aluin to her, but had always either forgotten or decided that it didn't matter too much at that current time, so she shouldn't bother him.

Needless to say, she was very surprised to see Aluin sitting on the kitchen floor, surrounded by what appeared to be water, a cup, and his own tears. For a moment, this actually aroused her usual catlike curiosity and excitement within her - this was an opportunity! Perhaps she would be able to interact with him properly for once. However, he seemed... very scared, as usual. And also in a bit of a dilemma.

"...Oh... Hi, Aluin. You don't look so good."

She took a careful step forward, not sure if he'd be okay with her approaching or not.

"...Can Reia help you?" He certainly looked like he needed some help, at least with cleaning up. As such, she started to take the long way around him to get some paper towels and clean up the mess.

Reia was scary. She had become especially scary when Alt dad had made her his child before Anita and Aluin. It had made Anita really mad and that had really scared Aluin, and that's why Reia was especially scary. But Alt dad had said Aluin should get along with her, so Aluin was nice by trying not to be seen by Reia so he didn't bother her. Mean boys at school said Aluin would do everyone a favour if he just disappeared, maybe Reia appreciated it that Aluin was doing his best at that. And Aluin tried to give as much nice things to Reia as he could, that always seemed to appease the mean boys at school.

But right now Aluin was too scared to disappear or give Reia something. The water on him was cooling more and more and Aluin tried not to sob even louder. He didn't want Alt dad to come and think he wasn't getting along with Reia.
Reia approached, slowly so Aluin wasn't as scared, and he sniffed and slowly and carefully picked up the cup he had fallen on top of. It had a big crack on the side, and just looking at that crack made Aluin scared and want to cry more. But he didn't, he tried to stay brave, and instead lifted the cup towards Reia. Reia was getting paper towels, Aluin wasn't that scared of paper towels. They were like big, more coarse napkins, Aluin liked napkins.

    "Cup broke...it's scary. Water is..cold, that's...scary too..."
Aluin said, his voice still shivering, and his body was starting to shiver, since the water was seeping into his pajamas.

Reia very carefully tore off a handful of paper towels, then went back towards Aluin and stopped. Now, she wasn't sure exactly what she should do. As ironic as the situation was, it was at times like this that she felt like scared little Aluin scared her too. Reason being that she never knew how to react around him - her usual route of just saying whatever came to mind seemed like it would scare him even more.

"Scary..." she muttered to herself, as she pondered this and tried to contemplate what she should do.

As immature as Reia was and could be, she did eventually come to the conclusion that she should be gentle. Aluin was special. Special like the expensive stuffed animals she had grown to like collecting. Reia knew you had to be careful with those, because they're special and you don't want to break them. So, maybe she should treat Aluin the same way.

Kneeling down a careful distance away, Reia saw Aluin hold out the cup to her and mutter that it broke. She nodded slowly, and tried to inject a kind tone into her usually rather monotone voice.

"Cup broke, yeah. It looks like it has a crack. Do you want Reia to take it? We can tell dad person later. Reia thinks he'll buy you a new one."

She then gestured to the paper towels clutched in her hand, and asked a hesitant question.

"...Can... Can Reia come closer? And help clean up the water?"

Aluin was often too scared of everything and everyone, that he couldn't see beneath the surface. That was the case with Reia. Aluin was too afraid and too focused on staying out of her way that he never even paid attention to who she was. Aluin knew how Anita was, and how Alt dad was, and how the kind lady he sometimes still saw was. But Reia was just a mystery. And mysteries were the scariest thing of all.
So now Aluin was just observing Reia with a horrified expression, trying to figure out what she was going to do. Alt dad would lift Aluin up and help him clean the water and get him new clothes. Anita would do the same. What would Reia do?

Reia wasn't that scary, because she didn't immediately come close and move fast. Instead she talked in the kind of tone Aluin wasn't as scared to listen to and that Aluin had easier time answering to.
    "I don't want to...make Alt dad sad..."
Aluin said timidly and looked down at the cup, sniffing once. He nodded to both Reia asking if he wanted her to take the cup, and when she asked if she could come closer. Aluin set the cup down carefully and inched away a bit, so he wasn't right next to the water puddle. The way the wet fabric felt on his skin was scary, and Aluin held in a whimper.

Reia nodded slowly as he said he didn't want to make dad person sad. She was trying her very hardest to understand how Aluin was feeling right now, and even though she tended to be unempathetic, she could at least vaguely comprehend why someone as young as Aluin would fear making him sad. Personally, she would just go right up and tell him what happened, but she eventually chose not to say that out loud.

Continuing to move as slowly as she could manage (which was rather agonizing for her, but she tried her best), Reia came forward and began to mop up the water with her paper towels. It was fairly easy to clean up, and although by time she used up all her towels there was still some moisture left on the floor, she decided she would come back to that later.

"Reia will finish the cleaning later," she announced, just in case Aluin would be scared by what was left. Then, she looked over at him curiously, unsure of what she should do next. The rest of the mess remained on Aluin, but she didn't think he'd be okay with her touching him to clean it off. The next obvious solution was new clothes, but she had no idea what kind he would want. Oblivious to the expression of horror Aluin had on his face, she thought for a moment before speaking again, trying to continue with a kind tone of voice.

"...Do you want new clothes? If you want... Reia can go up with you and pick some out."

Reia wasn't acting as scary as usual, and although that change in itself was also scary Aluin preferred this Reia who didn't talk loudly and move fast and all the time. Aluin realized that Reia was probably acting like this because of him, she was being thoughtful, and that was scary, but at the same time Aluin did appreciate Reia trying. Feeling appreciation was scary too...

Aluin watched Reia mop up the water, it was scary watch the nice white and soft paper towels get all grey and wet, but Aluin knew the water shouldn't just be left there either. Wet feet and socks were scary. But when Reia stopped and there was still some moisture on the floor Aluin nearly began to panic, very scared, but Reia was able to quell that fear when she said she would finish later. Aluin looked at her timidly, and nodded a bit. Later, yes. Then it wouldn't be as scary.

Just like Alt dad would've done Reia suggested they should go get new clothes. Aluin wanted that too, changing clothes was scary but staying in these clothes was scarier. So yet again Aluin nodded and began to stand up. It was scary how the wet fabric felt against his skin, but Aluin tried to hold back his fear and instead just sniffled once. Aluin knew Reia wouldn't be able to carry him, Alt dad had said she wasn't strong, that she just looked bigger but was actually as weak as Aluin.

When Aluin was standing up, squeezing the hem of his shirt in his hands, he looked at Reia on the verge of tears, waiting for her to start moving first. Following was less scary than leading.
