Guide to Success
Hello and welcome! This is your guide to getting started on Starlight Academy, and how to integrate yourself into the community and forums. While there's no special means to get in on the action, there are some steps that you can take to get involved and dive into the action!
That said, please please please read our Board Guidelines before anything else!
The first step for you will be to register and to fill out your profile. We operate as an Account Per Player site, where each player has a single account they post all their characters and RP posts from. Your OOC name should be the same everywhere, including the forums and the cbox! Make sure you put your real birthday in when registering.
Then, introduce yourself! We're excited to meet you and want to get to know you. Feel free to mention any nicknames you prefer, what you're interested in, what kind of characters you like to play, and any other stuff you want to share about yourself.
Hopping on to the Cbox (located at the bottom of the board) is also a great way to say hello for the first time. Once you get your greeting out of the way, we'd love to hear how you found us!
We hope by now you have read the Board Guidelines. Beside from those, we have some other very important documents for you to check out.
- Manta Carlos Islands Information
- The Academy Information
- FAQ - This is optional! However if you have a specific question in mind, this is a good place to browse to make sure it hasn't already been answered.
- Character Rules & Application
For Starlight Academy, chances are you will be creating either a gifted human, or a species with powers of their own. Powers can range from serious to silly, and if you are stuck on what to choose we have a powers suggestions list to help inspire you. If you still aren't getting any ideas right off the bat, perhaps the Wanted Ads area can inspire you?
Characters can be of any age, ethnicity, identity, sexuality, or species. The powers you bestow on them can be as unique and varied as you wish. It's a very open world, and our roleplay is about more than just the Academy but the whole Island itself.
You'll want to read the character rules and fill out your application next. Be very careful to read everything over, that way you don't miss any crucial details. This will help you get approved faster!
Getting a character approved doesn't lock you in, however! Players are free to edit their characters personality/biography/history/appearance as much as they'd like, and only power (and species ability) changes need to be handled by the staff. If you'd like to improve or change your characters powers, check out the power upgrade process.
Once your application has been checked by a moderator and approved, you're ready to go! Mods will handle the claims for you automatically, but if you ever need to check or update your characters claims, check out the Claims forum. If your character is a student, you can make an in-character introduction post for them at the admissions office. Otherwise you can start anywhere else, or post in the plots forum and its subforums and get plotting right away. After your character is approved it is a VERY good idea to link to them in your signature, so other people can find them easily!
When making a plot with me thread, it's good to put in details about your character, aspirations that you have, and requests for story lines and plots that you would love to see. The more details, the better. Invite people to post on it, and start a conversation about how to get a thread going!
If you're looking for an open thread to join, be sure to check out the Open Topic thread! Open threads are a great way to connect with other roleplayers, and can be a great option for those who prefer to be spontaneous over planning things out. It's recommended that if you want to go this route, you jump into someone else's thread rather than making your own, as it gaurentees you'll have a partner almost immediately.
Remember that Starlight Academy is a consent based roleplay. What does this mean? This means that you cannot godmod (take control of other peoples characters!), powerplay (make your character overpowered!), or metagame (give your character knowledge that only the player would know!). Only do these things if you have the explicit permission of your roleplay partner.
Starlight Academy operates on the golden rule: give and it will be given back to you! If you want to get involved in the community, don't be passive, be bold! Post on other peoples plotters, join other folks threads, and reach out to those you want to be involved with. I guarantee the response will be positive, and you'll see great results! If you do these things, you will receive the same treatment as well.
Lurking is okay sometimes, but be sure to proactive in seeking out opportunities for yourself and your characters!
Once you start getting active and participating, be sure to check out our Medals to see if you can earn any awards. While waiting on posts, you can check out the Spotlights and contests, join in a forum game, or tell us about what you're up to in the Community Lounge. If you're having trouble with the technical side of our board, read how to set it up in the technical guides.
Our cbox is a great hotspot to get involved and get talking to other people. But there's more to it than just sneaking in. Make yourself known, greet people, join in on the current conversation! If you feel ignored, don't be discouraged. Instead, raise your voice a little, and make it impossible for anyone to miss you. The cbox moves fast sometimes, so be sure to be the one to strike up a conversation and get into the flow of things!
So welcome to Manta Carlos Island, and welcome to Starlight Academy! We're excited to meet you, so don't hesitate to reach out to any of the staff if you need anything.
